Writer's Workshop

Luca shared the book Pyramid by David Macaulay that inspired him to discover how to build a pyramid out of paper. He had made step by step pictorial directions. The entire class followed his directions and made their own pyramids.

The next day we began our How To writing unit in which we each write a teaching book. We wrote as a class the directions that went with building the pyramids. We use the words First, Next, Then, Last to organize the step by step directions. On the following days we made a class list of subjects we could teach. Then we made pictorial directions of our own subject we chose to write about.

spring is here!!

It felt like spring and so we drew flowers, they were all so bright and cheery. We crumpled them up and chose one during Morning Meeting. We then said good morning to the friend who had drawn the flower. Later in the day we finally replaced the snowmen that were in the window this winter with flowers. We made them with coffee filters, markers, water and construction paper.

FAMILY CLOsing Circle

It was so wonderful having so many families join us for our Closing Circle. Thank you! Everyone really enjoyed it. We sang our goodbye song in English, Italian (thank you Luca and Dad), German (thank you Louisa's grandpa) and sign language. If anyone knows any other languages, we would love to know too! Write it down and we will attempt to learn it. Then we said goodbye with our Bubble Bubble Bump Fizz goodbye. As always, we ended with talking about what we liked about our day. In order to be dismissed we had to name the number that came after a certain number that Ms. Bell gave us.

integrated Literacy & art

We have had two visits by Alexandra an artist in residence from Arts to Smarts. We created animal puppets and are working on making fact cards about what our animals like to eat, where they live and an interesting fact about them. For the last two weeks we have read many nonfiction books about animals.

writer's workshop

We wrote a class story, everyone helped create the beginning, middle and end. We learned about what elements go into each section. We connected what we learned whole class to stories we wrote with a partner; focusing on one part at a time. Some amazing collaboration happened. The next step is to create books together and write across many pages.

MATH

We worked on 2 group combinations of 5, 6, 7, and 8. At the same time, we focused on how mathematicians show their thinking. We drew representations of our thinking and work in our math journals. We labeled, organized, made diagrams (math pictures) of our ideas.

crafternoon

On Friday we spent our afternoon decorating bags for Valentine's Day. We traced, cut, colored, and glued. Our bags are now ready for the 14th.

fundations

We have finished learning all the lower case letters and their sounds. We are now practicing writing upper case letters. At the same time we are working alphabetical order and putting letters together to make words.

literacy

We have been learning about how to tell stories. We had 2 CLIF events this week. We heard some great stories about Vermont from "long ago" that were brought alive with artifacts. On Friday we got to touch and explore some artifacts. We guessed what we thought the tools were used for and had some really great thoughts. We even justified our thinking by explaining how we discovered the tool moved during our exploration.

math

We have begun a new unit. We continue our study of counting however with deeper concepts. We are justifying and generalizing how and why mathematicians, us, answer "how many?", compare 2 groups, show thinking when solving math problems and find different ways to put a quantity into two groups.

literacy

We worked on our independent reading stamina. We were all engaged and were able to sustain reading for the longest time yet. Everyone was so interested in their books we then had time to read with our partners so we could TALK about what we read.

We also have read and reread "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. The last time we read it we acted it out and pretended to be the animals. We used our blanket to be the mitten and got under it as Ms. Bell read the story. The most fun was when the mouse came in causing the bear to sneeze and we tumbled out of the mitten.

We created our own math problem. We were doing our Spider Web greeting during Morning Meeting. We wondered "how long is our web?" This spurred a day long investigation directed by the students. We came up with a plan of how we could answer our question. We worked together, problem solved, made decisions on how to measure, counted and came up with an answer. 1,436 unifix cubes and bears long.

Math Habit: Private Reasoning Time

During a number talk we use this time to figure out how many dots we see and how we see them. We also make a plan about what we will say with our friend during the Partner Talk time of math.

Math Habits: Explaining, Genuine Questions and Justifying

During our Partner Talk we share with our friend what we think and explain how we know. For example: "I think it's 6 because I counted and the last number I said was 6." or "I think it is 6 because I saw a group of 3 and another group of 3. I know if I put 3 and 3 together it makes 6."

family morning meeting

We had a fun time having some parents come to visit us during our Morning Meeting. We had an EXTRA long Morning Meeting. We decided to do one of our favorite greetings, Ball Pop. We then did our Morning Meeting wall which includes our schedule for the day, calendar, counting the days in school and weather. Next we read our morning message and found letters and words we knew in the message. Finally we played Coseeki. The parents were all good sports and joined in all the activities.

(Sorry there was a technical glitch so no photos to accompany this description)

literacy

We continue to learn more letters during Fundations each week. We have been practicing reading with a partner during Reader's Workshop. We are reading one book, in the middle, and talking about what we see with our partner. During Writer's Workshop we have been talking about why people write. The latest reason we have been discussing is to teach. We have been reading non fiction books and making public records about what we learned from that book/author. Most Fridays we do a craft related to a book. Sometimes we make something related to the letters we have learned. In this photo, we made an octopus for the letter O.

math

We warm up our math brains with a number talk most days. We start by taking Private Reasoning Time (during which we think about what we notice and make a plan of how to explain to our partners how we know) and think about how many we see and how we see them. Then we turn and talk with our partners, we begin by saying "I think" and then "I know because". Then, once everyone has had time to talk we share some math thinking whole group.

There are some "new" toys at our centers to play with. Each month or so new toys are put out for us to explore with our friends. During this time we work on our social skills and stretching our imaginations.

math

We continue to work on counting and cardinality. We were introduced to the concept of Core Math Ideas. These are questions that focus our study in our math units. This unit we will be working on these Core Math Ideas:

How do mathematicians count things?

How do mathematicians represent how many?

How do mathematicians know how many?

How do mathematicians compare quantities?

We have now learned 7 letters. The latest two were vowels. We practice writing, recognizing, and making their sounds every day. We often choose to write letters on our own. So exciting to be learning the letters!

math

We began a new unit on counting and cardinality this week. Cardinality means the number of elements in a group. We have been working with our partners and are becoming comfortable with the math habits of private reasoning time, explaining our thinking, and listening to understand.

READing

We have been building our library of favorites. The reading coach, Mrs. Lapointe, has come in a few times to be a guest and read us some new favorites. All of us are able to read our favorites. We know that one can read books by looking at the pictures, remembering the words and/or reading the words. We like to read them to each other even!

We have been learning about how to read and look at books as expected. We explored books at our tables with our friends. At the end of the explore time we come together to share our favorite pages from our books that day.

crafternoon

We read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. We talked about how each dot is different just like people and those differences make us all special. We made our own dots, which will be hanging up in our room all year.

literacy

We had our 5th grade buddies visit for the first time. We will be meeting with them once a month. This time our buddies read us Piggie and Gerald books by Mo Willems. We have been reading and rereading them during read aloud and LOVE them!

We learned two more letters this week; b and f. We practiced writing them and came up with words that began with those sounds.

PHONICS & FUNDATIONS

We began our phonics program, Fundations this week. Our first letter we learned was the letter "t". We learned the sound, the name of the letter and a word that begins with the sound (top). Each week we will be learning 1-3 new letters. We practice writing the letters on whiteboards that have the Fundations lines on them--Sky Line, Plane Line, Grass Line and Worm Line that guide us in learning how to write the letters. Each week there will be information in your child's Friday Folder about what we have done in Fundations. Mrs. Lavigne and Mrs. LaMothe our speech and language teachers came in on Tuesday and did some letter activities with us. Every Tuesday they will visit to do "The Sound of the Week".

mathematics

We have been growing our minds as mathematicians! We have been working with our partners to talk about what we know and how we know. Whole group we share our mathematical thinking and learn new concepts from our peers with guidance from Ms. Bell. We have been practicing our Math Habits Private Reasoning Time and Listening to Understand while debating what we know about shapes.

literacy

We have been creating a collection of our favorite books. Our favorite books are ones that we like to read over and over again. We currently have some Pete the Cat and Piggie and Gerald books in our bin. We started our thinking about our Hopes and Dreams for this year. We painted hearts with watercolors, on which we will write our Hope and Dream. We practiced writing our names on Fundations lines with our new markers to create a rainbow.

We had a great first "Week" of school! I was impressed with how well everyone followed directions, participated, and played together. What a great group! We spent our time practicing routines, learning the expectations of our classroom materials, and getting to know one another.

In the mornings we first eat breakfast while quiet music plays on the Smartboard. When we are done we clean up and read books together on the rug where we have Morning Meeting each day.

We practiced freezing when Ms. Bell rings the chimes and raises her hand to listen to directions. We had fun pretending we were different animals when moving around the room.

We also practiced lining up in the classroom. We have to line up a lot! We line up to go to Unified Arts, lunch, recess, and dismissal.

One afternoon we explored some the math tools we will be using this year. We used geoblocks, unifix cubes and pattern blocks.

Also during math we began using math habits, which we use all year, to discuss what we know and notice about shapes. For the first time we used Private Reasoning Time to think about something we knew about shapes. We made a public record about the shapes. We began our discussion with the sentence stems "I see" and "I notice".
