LITERACY

We worked on our perseverance in writing. We learned that writers keep trying and trying even when faced with something difficult. We practiced our perseverance by drawing someone doing a handstand, doing our best and being proud of our work.

Speech pathologist Mrs. Lavigne and Mrs. LaMothe visit every Tuesday to do phonics activities during Morning Meeting. We now are working on rhyming; words that sound the same at the end.

We got a donation of "Zoobooks" magazines. They are nonfiction magazines all about a variety of animals. During Reading Workshop we had our first chance to read the magazines with our January reading partner. They are interesting with loved sharing what we learned with the entire class.

MATH

This week we have been focusing on the Core Math Idea "The Mathematician Idea" of how do mathematicians solve problems and show their thinking? We have been solving our story problems by acting them out and drawing math pictures, diagrams. There are multiple pathways to solve the same problem as can be seen in the first photo. Mathematicians change their thinking as they listen to other mathematicians explain their rationale as seen in the second photo (number labels and arrows showing movement were added).

We practiced number writing by looking at 10 frames and explaining how we knew the amount by using math as the authority. Often when one mathematician explains his/her thinking another will revoice the justification.
