BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: To participate in our Student Opportunities, students must maintain positive student behavior. For many of these opportunities, the students serve as representatives of our school and as role models for other students. It is an honor to represent the school in these positions. Students either apply or are selected for these positions, and just like in the real world, a student can be put on suspension, put on "leave without pay," or be removed from a team or their position.
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS: The Battle of the Books Team is comprised of 4th and 5th grade students who must read a selected set of books to prepare for a district-wide competition. It is voluntary, but students who do not read the required number of books may be dismissed from the team.
FLAG PATROL: Several 5th Graders are chosen each year to serve on the flag patrol. These students are trained to ceremonially raise the flag each morning with respect and dignity. Students apply for this position and are trained by local law enforcement, military representatives, or community volunteers.
PEER PATROL: Select students in 3rd-5th grade who assist with morning duties and monitor the halls during arrival. They serve as ambassadors for the school by welcoming and giving school tours to visitors, guests, and new students. They assist with trash collection at the end of the school day. Students must complete an application and be recommended by a teacher. These students should exemplify STAR Behavior at all times. Final selection of students is made by the school counselor.
STAR HELPER: Our Star Student Helpers help our custodians get the school ready for dismissal. At 2:50 each day, these students come down the hallways to empty the wastebaskets and help with last-minute details. It is an honor to be chosen for this position because it means a student can be trusted to complete their classwork on time so that they can complete their duties. They can also be trusted to quietly walk in and out of classrooms without disruption.
S.T.E.M. SPECIAL: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) lessons will be taught by our Media Specialist every other week. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different facets of the STEM world. Students will engage in hands-on activities to complete tasks using The Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve). Our goal is to expose students to many different ways STEM can be used in real-life and to show how STEM impacts the world around us.
S.T.E.A.M-"STEAM" adds the "A" for Arts, encompassing disciplines like the humanities, visual arts, music, and design. STEAM encourages the integration of creative and critical thinking skills through the arts, which enhances problem-solving and innovation in STEM fields. At Stantonsburg, our Arts Teachers and STEM/Media Teacher work together to help our students learn to use out-of-the-box thinking to create innovative solutions.
STEM Teams: Selected 5th Graders are chosen each year to represent Stantonsburg Elementary at the Lego and/or Robotics Competition. These students train with our media coordinator both during and after school to prepare for the competitions.
