COMMUNICATION GOAL:
Clear and open communication with the adults in our students’ lives is imperative for student success. Parents should be updated on their child’s academic performance, behavior, work habits, homework, etc. Please allow 24-48 hours for teachers to return phone calls, Class Dojo Messages, and emails. If a message is left on a Friday or on a Holiday, additional time may be needed for a response.
CLASS DOJO
Teachers will use Dojo to provide information such as dates and times for schoolwide events and communication from teachers concerning things going on in their classrooms. Teachers can use Classdojo to text back and forth with parents. Dojo is a good communication tool because it translates into many languages. Homeroom teachers will send home information to help families join Dojo during the first week of school. Please check your child's dojo daily.
CONTACT INFORMATION:
Student addresses and phone numbers should always be kept up-to-date. Notices from the school/teacher will be mailed to the address ON FILE IN NCSIS. Unless you notify us of any changes, what we have on file is what we use. Please furnish the front office with your latest contact address and phone numbers. These numbers should allow the office/teacher to contact you between the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. In some cases, the parent/guardian may be required to attend a parent conference before the student may return to school. Where legal guardianship is provided, information will be given to the legal guardian. If one parent does not live within the Stantonsburg school district, messages will be delivered to the address that provides the student the right to attend SES. In the case of joint custody, efforts will be made to send messages to the parent with whom the child will spend the night’s lodging.
EMERGENCY CONTACT (REUNIFICATION FORM):
Please provide the office with the contact number and address of a trusted friend or relative who will know how to reach you at all times. We may contact this person in the event of an emergency if a parent cannot be reached. This person should be trusted to pick your child up from school if we cannot reach a parent. We may also contact this person if a parent cannot be reached regarding school, homework, discipline, and attendance concerns. Please make sure this person is trustworthy and will deliver messages to you, the parent/guardian. This may be the only way to contact you in an emergency, so please make sure that you update this information if it changes. Children get very anxious during emergencies if their parents cannot be reached. Parents or guardians who have not provided numbers/addresses or an emergency contact person who can be reached between 7:30am and 3:30pm may be contacted by a social worker to update this information.
DAILY & WEDNESDAY COMMUNICATION FOLDERS (YELLOW FOLDERS):
Communication Folders will be provided for students. These will provide two-way communication throughout the year. The folders should go home and be returned in students' book bags. One folder should last for the entire school year. The office will try to send notes home to be read/signed and returned on Wednesday, but parents should check their child's bookbags daily in case information needs to be sent on a different day. Parents/guardians will need to read and respond to the information sent home. Many teachers send these folders home daily and will communicate with parents when they need to be returned. Two-way communication is important for the success of our students.
STUDENT PHONE USE
Teachers may send students to the office to use the phone to contact their families in emergencies. This is preferred to use of personal electronic devices or classroom phones. Students may use their personal electronic devices to access contact information. Students should remember that the telephones are for teachers and staff to make necessary school related business calls. Students should be aware of how they are getting home in the afternoon prior to leaving for school in the morning. They should not be expected to call during the day to obtain this information. Students should be prepared to come to school. That means they should have books, homework, lunch or lunch money, etc. all organized the night before so that it will not be necessary to use the phone after they have arrived at school.
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES (Cellphones & Smartwatches):
Your child may have a cell phone at school. However, they must follow WCS Board Policy 3225/4312/7320 while on campus. The device must remain off and in their book bag all day (out of sight/out of mind). If a student has a cell phone out anywhere in the building or on the bus, they will be asked to put it away. If a student refuses to put it away, the student may be referred to the office for insubordination/failure to comply. If your child's device disrupts student learning or is used to engage in misconduct such as bullying or harassment, consequences will be issued in accordance with Board policy.
MESSAGES:
If you need to leave a message for your child or for a teacher, Mrs. Davis, our school secretary, can check the schedule to see if children are in their regular classrooms. Messages are delivered to students, teachers, teacher assistants, and other support staff members during non-instructional periods to minimize disruption of instructional time.
CONFIDENTIALITY
FERPA protects students’ educational records. School employees must refrain from discussing a student with anyone who is not a legal parent or guardian of the child or who is not serving the child in a professional school role. When discussing conflict between two students, teachers and administration will only be able to discuss disciplinary actions with the parent of the student who is receiving the consequences, and will not be able to discuss details with the parents of the other student. Students should be careful not to email Personally Identifiable Information like their Student UID and passwords.
STUDENT REUNIFICATION FORMS
Each student is required to submit a Student Reunification Form. This form is the only reference for contacting families in an emergency situation. Students may not be released from the school or any emergency evacuation location with any person who is not listed on the form. Information on the form must be updated when telephone contact information changes. If a teacher cannot get in touch with a parent with the numbers in NCSIS, the Reunification Form is the next best resource for locating a parent/guardian.
PARENT PORTAL
Parents can access student grades by visiting the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. To access your child's parent portal, contact the front office to get their login information.
WITHDRAWALS:
Please notify your child’s teacher and the office if you plan to move or change schools. All textbooks, library books, and technology must be accounted for or paid for before withdrawing your child. Since all of our records are stored electronically, you will not receive a withdrawal form from the school. When you enroll your child in their next school that school will send a records request, and we will send the records directly to the new school at that time.
