Dear Parents of Year 1 and Year 2
Earlier in the week, our bee keeper noticed that there were a number of pieces of wood in the apiary - this wood had clearly been thrown in rather than falling from the surrounding trees. On closer inspection, he noted that the wood had hit the top of the hive and caused the bees to emerge into the cold air. Sadly, the result was catastrophic for several hundred bees. Our bee keeper hopes there is a viable population remaining in the hive but these actions may have compromised our colony and we are not sure the remaining bees will survive the winter.
We were able to use our CCTV to investigate this and identified some children who were playing in the area after school, one of whom told us about the wood throwing. I have no doubt that the children intended no harm and were trying to see if they could get the bees to come out to look at. The child explained that they had gone to the area around the apiary because the hens were not around. The child also told us that their parents weren't with them, so the children were to all intents and purposes unsupervised in the car park.
We have talked to all the children in Years 1 and 2 about the consequences of disturbing the bees and the need to remember the rule about being respectful. When we pointed out the fact that they wouldn't think of throwing stones at the hens or their pets, I think the penny properly dropped.
So, whilst only a handful of children from both year groups was involved, I think this incident provides an opportunity for a timely reminder that all Key Stage 1 children need to be closely supervised when they leave their classes at the end of the day. Being free to roam the car park is not safe and whilst traffic is restricted from coming in or out, people still might move cars to allow staff to exit at 3.30. It is just not a safe space. All children are supervised when visiting hens or bees during the day and this must continue outside school hours.

Mark Wildman

Dear families,
In Year 2, we aim to listen to each child read on a 1:1 basis, every two weeks. Please could you ensure that your child's reading book comes to school with them every day to make this possible.
Thank you for your continued support.
