Day School News

February 3, 2024

Dear Day School Community,

The time has finally arrived for our Day School scientists and engineers! Our STEM fair will take place on Monday, February 5 @6PM in the gymnasium. We are so excited to see all of the science experiments and inventions at our 2024 fair. Please see details in this newsletter about fair expectations. Participating students will bring their projects to school on Monday morning to share with their classmates.

This month we'll be exploring history from both ends of the 19th century. On Wednesday, 5th graders will be traveling to Charlestown to visit the USS Constitution and museum to see the oldest commissioned US Naval ship that participated in the battle of 1812. On Friday, we turn to the industrial revolution of the late 19th century as fourth graders explore what life was like in the Lowell textile mills. We are grateful for the generous grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for making these field trips possible.

Sincerely,

Chris Louis Sardella, Principal

Chrissy Michaud, Assistant Principal

Yearbook Volunteers Needed

The Day School is looking for a group of parent/guardian volunteers to help us with the creation of our yearbook. We have a company that has online templates ready to receive our photos and memories. It is always best to have a group of people who are willing to take on different sections of the yearbook. Here are some typical volunteer roles:

We need many people to make our yearbook possible. Please reach out to me ASAP if you would like to get involved so we can get our yearbook off the ground. Since our yearbook is done electronically, much of the work can be done from home at your convenience.

Please contact me by email with your preference for how you would like to help out. I look forward to hearing from you.

Snow Days and Delayed Opening Information

As the winter weather approaches, we wanted to share the procedures for snow days and delayed openings due to inclement weather.  Dr. Chew will initiate a Blackboard Connect phone message to notify both staff and families of school closings or delays, see more information below..  These notifications will also be posted on the district's website. In the event of a snow day or delayed opening due to inclement weather our morning programs (Before School Care, Student Council, Chorus, Morning Band and Orchestra) will not take place. Please also note that Breakfast is not served on two-hour delay days.

Winter Wear - Safety First

As you know, temperatures are beginning to drop, and New England weather is unpredictable. Please send your child to school in a warm jacket and appropriate late fall/early winter clothing each day (long pants, jacket, hat, gloves and scarves).  Winter snow boots and snow pants are required for those who would like to play in the snow during recess. We will be trying to get outside for recess as much as possible (20 minutes each day), unless it is below 20 degrees (temperature or wind chill). We want to make sure the children have appropriate clothing for the weather. Sweatshirts are not sufficient for 20 minutes of outdoor play when temperatures are below freezing.

Recycle Sneakers and Raise Money for Day School

The GotSneakers recycling organization will help us to recycle our sneakers! We will ONLY accept athletic sneakers and sports related footwear. Ideally, unused and gently used sneakers will raise the most money for our school. But, if you have sneakers with holes, mold/mildew or detached soles, GotSneakers will take them as well. By participating, you’ll help keep sneakers out of landfills while also putting shoes on the feet of people living in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, West Africa, and Europe. Some of the unusable sneakers will even be made into new athletic surfaces! Your old sneakers will make a huge difference; reducing what we throw away and raising money for our school is a win-win!

Please drop off all donations to the box outside near the Day School’s main entrance doors. We encourage you to bring all non-athletic shoes/boots to the drop-off bin in the St. Catherine’s Church parking lot, to Savers in Nashua, or to other local thrift shops for resale. Thanks so much for your support!

Day School Library Wishlist

The Norman E. Day School Library has an Amazon Wishlist! Ms. McGann, our School Librarian, has created an Amazon Wishlist of books consisting of popular and award-winning titles, teacher recommendations, and requests by students. At this time, Ms. McGann is encouraging Parents/Guardians/Caregivers to help build our School Library Collection by donating a book from the List. Once a book has been received, it will be added to the Day School Library Collection and a personalized, permanent bookplate will be added to thank those individuals who donated the book. We greatly appreciate your generosity to our School community and thank you for your continued support.
