Day School News

December 14, 2019

Dear parents,

During our December Cobra Council meeting, Mrs. Sturgis and I asked the students about favorite gifts they have received during the holiday season or perhaps at a birthday celebration. I fully expected students to talk about amazing electronic devices, toys, and trips. Our first volunteer was a fifth grader who said her best gift was when her grandfather visited from Florida. I was waiting for her to say that grandpa arrived with a sack of gifts. But, that was it. Grandpa visiting was the best gift ever. The simple idea that family is the best gift speaks volumes about our Day School community.

Later in the community meeting, Mrs. Sturgis and I presented six wrapped gifts that each contained one of core values representing the SPIRIT of Day School:

S is for Safety

P is for Perseverance

I is for Inclusion

R is for Respect

I is for Integrity

T is for Teamwork

Students unwrapped these gifts and found a card printed with a scenario that might involve Day School students. They had to guess the core value the scenario represented:

Every day after school, Sampriti decided to pick up trash on the playground. Her friends wondered her why she was taking the time to do that especially since no teacher asked her to do it. Sampriti said everyone deserved a clean place to play. Sampriti was proud she did the right thing even though no adult was watching her. (Integrity)

After unwrapping each core value, the students talked about how core values could be considered gifts since there was no monetary value attached to them. Students made comments such as it is a gift to teachers when you are respectful or it is a gift to yourself when you include someone because you feel good inside.

Thank you for partnering with Day School faculty and staff for instilling these core values in your children. We truly have a special group of students at the Day School. They are my best gift this holiday season.

Sincerely,

Chris Louis Sardella, Principal

Day School is collecting gently-used, wearable pairs of shoes this year for a fundraising program called ShoeBox Recycling. Donated shoes are shipped around the world for resale and reuse. Our school earns 50 cents for each pound of shoes. This money goes directly toward funding our many activities, including arts and education programs. Let's see how many shoes we can collect this year!

Shoes must be in wearable condition, without holes in the soles, cannot be wet or mildewed, and must have shoelaces if they are necessary for the shoe to function.

Types of shoes ACCEPTED: Almost all types of gently used shoes including adult and children's casual shoes, dress shoes, athletic shoes, boots, work boots, and sandals.

Types of shoes NOT ACCEPTED: Shoes in need of repair, wet or mildewed shoes, heavy winter boots, ski boots, roller skates, rollerblades, ice skates, flip flops, Crocs and bedroom slippers.

To help, please drop off gently-used, wearable shoes in the lobby of the Day School. And thanks!
