Dear Families,
On Friday we celebrated earning our last letter (we were working on "Use Kindness") by celebrating with PJs and flashlight fort reading. We worked on being kind by including others in our fort making and play.
Also this week, Tyler from the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust brought in specimens of mollusks, arthropods, and echinoderms for us to examine. We shared our observations, asked questions, and made new connections.
On Thursday we were lucky to see a presentation from author Lynn Plourde. She talked about her new book, The Bionic Boy. We learned about limb differences and brainstormed what it means to be hero. In the picture here you can see Denley and Ellis trying out different ways of picking up a glass. Denley is using his wrists and Ellis is using a 3-D printed articifical hand.
In literacy we have now wrapped up module 2, with presentations about deep sea exploration. We filmed these and the kids are excited to show you their hard work at Student Led Conferences in April. In our new module we are learning about equal rights and the historic women's suffrage movement. We are reading a historical fiction novel called The Hope Chest. We are loving this book! On April 15th we will be doing field work at the Maine State House in Augusta. We will see the important work our elected representatives do and do some deeper thinking about the branches of government. Permission slips will be coming home next week.
Students practice their Module 2 presentation.
In math we are learning about equivalent fractions by modeling them on diagrams and number lines. We are also wrapping up our cam and pushrods in genius hour. There is always so much learning going on at school!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Meredith
