Dear Families,
This week we continued to build our classroom community. We have discussed the behaviors that are important to us in our learning environment and we are learning to treat each other with respect and empathy. We are working on our active listening skills and learning what it looks like and sounds like to be a learner at school.
In math we began a new unit exploring place value up to the millions place. We learned that commas bundle units in groups of 3 and practiced naming numbers in standard form, expanded form and number form. You can learn about that unit and how to support your child at home at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lddBA1WLMUYBObuAM1sIbVQEEI04Xk1C/view?usp=sharing
In literacy we began our first module. This module is about poets, poetry, and becoming writers. We are reading Sharon Creech's "Love That Dog" as our anchor text and will be learning how to be close readers, analyze poetry, and write poetry that inspires us. In the pictures below you can see some students sharing their ideas about William Carlos William's poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" to partners. We are working on conversation techniques for talking to partners including listening, repsponding, and encouraging them to elaborate on their thinking.
Monday we had our first genius hour! We learned that the brain needs challenge to grow and that the more we try hard things and practice the smarter it grows. We learned what it means to be a "neurosculptor" and modeled how neurons form new connections. We grappled with a tricky tangram puzzle and reflected on how it felt to try something hard and also how it felt as the task got easier to repeat after we had solved it.
Also this week we began a science unit on the human body. We learned about how our limbs move and made robot fingers using string to mimic tendons. Here you can see some students building their robot fingers.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at open house! Please feel free to reach out any time with questions or concerns. Coming home in your child's folder today is a genius hour permission slip for using tools in the classroom. Please sign it and return it to school when you can. Have a great weekend!
All the best,
Meredith Post
