Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful week together! I have really enjoyed getting to know your children and I know that we will have a great year together. They entered the classroom on Tuesday with positive attitudes, kindness, and a willingness to try new things! Are they a bit chatty? Yes! But they are already working hard to practice respectful listening and have no doubt that they will succeed.
I have a couple limited pictures to share this week as we are still waiting on some photo permission forms to be returned to school. Here's some of what we have been working on at school this week:
We have begun forming our new community and over the next few weeks we will continue talking about the importance of community and what it means to be a community member. This week we explored the idea by thinking about how communities are made up of different kinds of people with different personalities, strengths, and interests. Each student made a puzzle piece to represent themselves. We talked about how each person in our community is like a piece of a puzzle. Although we are all a little different, we are all important parts of the big picture. We worked as a crew to put our final puzzle together and it will hang on our wall this year.
In math we shared our feelings about math by creating glyphs. Each part of our glyph represented something that we think. We sorted our glyphs into several graphs and found both commonalities and differences. We also practiced our multiplication tables by learning a 3s rap and a 4s song. These tools help the brain memorize and skip count quickly. We self assessed which facts we are fluent with during cards and made a poster of the fact we need to practice at home. Your child will be coming home with this today. Please hang this poster somewhere visible in your house (refrigerator, bulletin board, door) and encourage your child to practice their individual fact list. We are working towards making all of our facts automatic.
Finally, in literacy we began learning some new routines that we will use throughout the year. We practiced having stamina and perseverance during independent reading.
Thank you for sharing your children with me! I am really excited for the year ahead!
All the best,
Meredith Post
