Dear Families,
I can't believe we are already finishing up the fourth week of school. We are well into our units in literacy and math with some mid-unit assessments already occuring. Here's a bit of what we are working on.
In math we took a mid unit assessment on Thursday on place value, comparing numbers, and rounding. These will come home in folders next week for you to look over. If your child earned a 1 or 2 in any of these standards, they will join a small group to review during our WIN ("what I need") block. Here you can see some children reviewing rounding skills in a game called Tic Tac Round.
In literacy we are continuing our unit on poetry. We have analzed the elements of poetry in several poems including "dog" by Valerie Worth and "The Pasture" by Robert Frost. They are learning to identify sensory language, structure, rhyme, and repitition in poems. We are also learning how to analyze the traits and feelings of characters in our anchor text "Love that Dog". We learned that good readers defend their ideas with examples and evidence. Our mid unit assessment will be on Monday. Here you can see some partners working together to read and analyze the text.
At genius hour this week we talked about the magic of mistakes. We did a STEM challenge to build a paper tower that can hold a stack of books using just two pieces of paper and two peices of masking tape. We practiced testing things out, and learning from our mistakes to make it even better.
Finally, we did a science experiment to make an "eye" using a lens and a paper retina. We used the light from the window to see how the image reflected on the paper retina. It was so interesting to see that it was upside down!
We had a big behavior discussion on Friday and have made some changes to help us all feel successful. We are working hard as a class to be in control of our bodies and stay on task throughout the school day. Thank you in advance for signing and returning the active listening reflections that are coming home today.
Have a great weekend!
Meredith
