Dear Families,
We have had a great first week back of school! We began a new module this unit. In this unit we will be learning about deep sea exploration. This week we began a nonfiction text about the Alvin Submersible- a deep ocean research submersible that is able to travel deep enough to explore about 99% of the ocean floor. We also began learning about some of the dangers of the ocean floor, including extreme pressure, cold temperatures, and dangerous critters. Here you can see the module guiding questions that are guiding this unit.
This week we listened to sections of the text and practicing paraphrasing- rewriting the details in our own words. The kids did fantastic work with these paragraphs! Below you can see students sharing their writing with partners.
In math, we are now fluent with the multiplication algorithm and are beginning to explore ways to solve multidigit division problems. We are working towards the standard algorithm by beginning with concrete models and drawings. Here you can see two students using base 10 blocks to divide a 3-digit number. From there, we will begin to divide by using partial quotients, before finally moving to the standard algorithm. This process helps children develop a deep understanding of the algorithm, understanding why and how each part works.
Thank you so much for your support with homework this week! If you child forgot to return it Friday, they can turn it in on Monday. A new packet for next week will go home at the end of the day Monday. Also, I am still looking for donations of shoeboxes if you have any remaining at home.
Have a great weekend!
Meredith
