Dear Families,
We had a great first week back after break! There was a lot happening at school. On Monday we celebrated the 100th day of school by thinking about 100 ways to be kind. We thought it would be too hard to do, but actually found it surprisingly easy to come up with 100 ways. We wrote them on heart cards, watercolored them, and hung them in the hallway for our school to enjoy.
On Thursday we were visited by a member of the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. Over the next five weeks he'll be coming in to teach us about the Gulf of Maine and marine animals that live there. This week we learned about the land formations of the gulf of Maine. He had a huge map that they kids sat around and explored before making their own smaller version.
In modules, our deep sea research groups continued this week. We took notes from two sources- one article and one book. Next week we will begin working with our group on our slides and preparing our presentations.
During genius hour we talked about the "dip", a feeling that everyone gets when they are working on a challenge and it starts to get really hard. We talked about ways to persevere, such as asking for help or trying a new strategy. Their cam and pushrods are really coming along!
Finally, in math we are nearing the end of our unit on angles and lines. Students now understand the difference between acute and obtuse angles and can measure them in degrees using a protractor. They also know some benchmark angles (360, 180, 90, and 45) which can be used to estimate the size of an angle. This week we will explore how angles are additive by problem solving for missing angle measures. Late in the week we will have the end of unit assessment.
This week is our last week doing Adventure PE skiing. On Friday we wrote thank you notes to our volunteer Mr. Keyes and will give them to him next week. I hope everyone had a great weekend!
