Dear Families,
Our module unit as been full of new learning about the ocean floor and deep-sea exploration! We have been exploring the significance of some of the discoveries made by scientists in the deep sea. We learned about how food decomposes differently at the bottom of the ocean. We learned how the ocean floor has mountains, canyons, and earthquakes because of the movement of the earth's tectonic plates. And finally, we learned about sunken cities that lie beneath the surface of the ocean.
In literacy we are now expert writers of summaries. We have learned that summaries begin with the main idea, include a few key details, and end with a concluding sentence. We have also been working on interpreting visuals in non fiction text to gain additional context and information. On Thursday and Friday we had our end of unit assessment.
Our science lesson this week extended our module by focusing on the Ring of Fire. We learned that most of the earth's volcanoes are located at the edge of a giant tectonic plate that extends throughout the Pacific Ocean. We mapped these volcanoes on a world map to find where they were located and see what patterns we could identify.
During genius hour we are building our cam and push rods. A couple new tools were introduced last week including the saw and the hand drill. These were very exciting to try out, but we are making sure to follow the rules to use them responsibly. Below you can see some students working on their creations. We are looking for donations of hard/ firm cardboard tubes if you have any at home. Our custodian accidentally threw out our saved stash, so we are back to square one!
Wishing everyone a great weekend!
