Dear Families,
We have had a lot of learning happening in fourth grade! Here is some of what we have been working on:
In literacy, we wrapped up our text analysis of Love That Dog by writing a paragraph about how Jack's character changed throughout the story. Students used their notes to draw on quotes and examples from the text to support their opinions. They did outstanding work on these! They will be shared with families at student-Led conferences in just a few weeks.
In the next part of our module students will be choosing a poet to research and write about it. We are focusing on the guiding question: "What inspirers writers to write poetry?" As we learn about our poet, we will be diving into what inspired them to begin writing and where we can see evidence of their inspiration in their work. Below, you can see students looking at pages from "A River of Words" about William Carlos Williams. They are using evidence from the text to make inferences about what inspired Williams.
In math we concluded our first unit on addition and subtraction with an assessment and are now completing a quick unit on measurement. We are learning how to convert between meters, kilometers, and centimeters, as well as liters/ milliliters, and grams/ kilograms. In the pictures here you can see students creating a meter strip using 100 centimeters from graph paper. We estimated and measured which things are about 1 meter.
We continue to practice our multiplication fluency throughout the day. Here you can see students playing the game "Compare". This is a really fun way to practice multiplication at home! It is played similar to "War" where both players take half the deck. Lay out two cards and multiply them. The player with the highest product wins all four cards.
During crew meetings we are working on integrity by discussing how we can take accountability for our own choices. We talked about how we make hundreds of decisions a day and each decision we make has a consequence-- both positive and negative. By making good choices, we can work towards our goals and practice becoming the people we want to be.
I hope you all had a great weekend! It's a pleasure to spend the days with your kiddos!
