Dear Families,
We are now six weeks into the school year and we are well settled into the groove of fourth grade! The pace of learning has really picked up and the class is working hard throughout the day. Our character goal this week has been empathy. In the picture at the top you can see us working on a kindness activity during our morning Crew meeting. On Thursday we earned our last letter in our class goal and they voted to have an extra recess outside in the beautiful weather. We had a really exciting game of the tag game "Among Us" on the playground. :)
Here's some of what we have been working on:
In math we are nearly to the end of our first module on place value, rounding, and addition and subtraction computation. Our end of unit assessment will be next week. This week we worked primarily on word problems, including two and three step word problems that combine operations. Word problems are complex! We are thinking through how to recognize language that indicates what kind of math we need to do, as well as taking time to make a plan, model strategies with diagrams, and check to see if our answer is reasonable.
During our literacy modules we are wrapping up our first unit by learning how to write an informative paragraph. We "painted" a model paragraph by looking at it's parts and learning that it needs a focus statement, proof from the text, and a conclusion sentence. We are practicing restating the question before jumping into our answer as well as defending our ideas with specific examples from the text.
We also began a new phonics computer program called Unlocked Phonics. This is differentiated program that is designed to help support both encoding and decoding skills. The kids took a pre-assessment to place them into individualized skill groups. They will progress by working both in small groups and in the online program.
We also read and wrote concrete poetry-- poetry that is in the shape of it's topic. Here you can see some students sharing their poems with the class.
Finally, just a reminder about homework: Students should be reading about 20 minutes nightly. This can be independent reading, shared reading, or listening to reading. They should also be practicing their multiplication facts--2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s facts should all be automatic at this point.
I hope you all have a fanatastic long weekend!
