Dear Families,
This week our educational program with the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust concluded with a very exciting squid dissection. We learned about the parts of the squid and dissected it's body to find it's pen, tentacles, beak, and even the lenses of it's eyes! We worked hard to approach this work as true scientists, taking it seriously and examining the animals closely. Below you can see some pictures of this important work.
In math this week we concluded our unit on finding equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. Students should now be able to reason about whether a fraction is greater than 1/2 or 1. They can find equivalent fractions by using a common denominator and use this information to compare and order fractions. Below you can see some students searching for pairs of equivalent fractions by using equations and mathematical reasoning.
During module we are learning about some important historical figures who stood up for their rights and the rights of others. Through our reading we have learned about Alice Paul, a famous women's suffragist; Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin, civil rights leaders; and Harriet Tubman, a conductor on the underground railroad. These historical leaders are inspiring thoughtful discussion about what it looks like to stand up for what you believe in.
We are closely reading primary and secondary sources about these leaders. We are comparing and comparing and contrasting the texts using examples in our writing. Also this week, we practiced spelling words with ar and or when they sound like /ər/ such as in "beggar" or "actor".
We enjoyed learning about the launch of Artemis II and have been keeping track of it's progress to the moon. Here you can see two friends building a rocket ship at together at recess.
Have a great weekend!
Meredith
