The SerWIS club at our school is devoted to giving back to our community through volunteer and the donation of necessities, which is what initially drew me towards the club. In this particular meeting we were tasked with packing firstaid kits to be sent to poorer communities.
At first the task seemed to be daunting, leaving me quite hesitant due to the precise amounts of pain relief, bandaids, and ointments we needed to pack within so many containers, however as a committed member of the club, and in the company of my friends I also felt a sense of determination to assist the club leaders.
The task itself wasn't strenuous but proved to be quite tedious since each kit had to contain the same products, making the process repetitive and time-consuming. This caused me to lose focus from time to time, which was an obstacle I had to overcome to avoid being careless and accidentally packing two of the same item. Nevertheless with encouragement from my peers we were able to double-check all the kits we made together and filled an entire cardboard box with ready-to-use firstaid kits, leaving us all satisfied.
This experience showed me how important teamwork can be, especially in tasks we do not wish to complete since self-motivation can be difficult, and we often require support from others whether it be through their presence or words of encouragement.
Learning Outcomes:
Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences - even when tedious, we persevered and managed to finish packing the medical kits
Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively - we managed to motivate one another to finish, and it was through teamwork we were able to doublecheck for any mistakes in our packaging we may have overlooked otherwise.
