Rainbow Run at Thai Sikh International School was the first run I had ever attended before. I had signed up for it after some of my friends had coaxed me into it mostly due to the fact I've never been a fan of exerting myself. For days leading up to the run I was ambivalent, unsure of what to expect from it, however I was looking forward to testing my limits, especially for a good cause. Upon arrival I was greeted with cheerful smiles and a rather relaxed environment which greatly soothed my nerves, and inspired me to push myself to run the full thirteen laps we were tasked to.
An obstacle I had to face was the running itself since I hadn't taken a P.E. class in over six months, paired with the sweltering morning heat. By the end of it I'd felt as though I were about to collapse, but it did teach me the importance of perseverance especially for my own personal gain (exercise), leading me to believe my first run had been successful for my own health and intriguing me in runs.
Early on I had strayed from my friends and gotten lost in the running itself which made it difficult to receive support from a group, however I feel that it was imperative for me to have been independent since I was able to properly gauge that I enjoyed runs, and not just the company of my peers.
From this experience I learned that the help of our peers can be beneficial, but it is also important to be self-reliant in order to discover more about our own self-identity without the influence of those around us, calling into question the extent we must exercise our independence when learning about our hobbies and enjoyment.
Learning Outcomes:
Show commitment and perserverance in CAS experiences - I finished the thirteen laps around the school's yard even though I was out of shape and it had been thirty degrees out.
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process - The challenge was unfamiliar however I believe I have become a more independent person out of this experience, and I hope to be able to develop my self-reliance in the future outside of physical exertion.
