What This Skill Means
Composition is how you frame the image to guide the viewer’s eye.
It includes:
Subject placement
Cropping decisions
Use of space
Angle choice
Background awareness
Visual balance
Strong composition feels intentional, balanced, and uncluttered.
Weak composition feels accidental.
This category answers:
Does the image look thoughtfully framed — or simply captured?
Common Mistakes That Lower Scores
Centering everything automatically.
Cropping too tight at uncomfortable points.
Leaving too much empty space without purpose.
Ignoring distracting background details.
Shooting from standing height every time.
Non-Negotiables
Do not crop at joints.
Remove hospital clutter from the frame.
Avoid background distractions.
Subject must be clearly identifiable as the focal point.
Tilted angles must be intentional — not accidental.
How to Improve
During the Session
Step left or right before you shoot.
Lower your angle to baby’s level.
Watch edges of your frame before clicking.
Ask: “What is pulling attention away from baby?”
Adjust background elements before shooting.
Quick Calibration Question
Before delivering:
Does my eye go immediately to baby?
Is there anything distracting in the corners? Is the cart showing?
Does this feel intentional or safe?
If I cropped slightly tighter, would it improve?
What “Excellent” Feels Like
The viewer doesn’t analyze the framing.
They just feel the emotion.
The image feels polished, balanced, and elevated
Composition vs Variety
Important distinction for scoring:
Composition = How the frame is built.
Variety = How many different setups/angles are included.
A gallery can have strong composition and still lack variety — they are separate categories.
Score 1–2 | Needs Coaching
Poor Framing or Visual Distraction
What This Looks Like:
Limbs cut off awkwardly
Cropping at joints (wrists, ankles, neck)
Hospital clutter distracting from subject
Background objects growing out of heads
Uneven, tilted framing without intention
Subject placed randomly in frame
Why This Scores Here:
The framing distracts from baby.
The viewer’s eye doesn’t know where to land.
This matches: “Poor framing or cluttered.”
Foreground rails and reflections obstruct the subject and divide the frame, pulling attention away from baby and weakening overall composition.
Competing focal points and heavy cropping reduce visual balance. Subject placement feels tight and slightly off-center, weakening overall composition.
Competing focal points and heavy cropping reduce visual balance. Subject placement feels tight and slightly off-center, weakening overall composition.
Background distractions (hospital elements visible off the cart) pull attention away from the baby. Framing does not fully isolate the subject, and the environment competes with the focal point instead of supporting it.
Score 3 | Good, Safe Composition
What This Looks Like:
Subject centered or safely placed
Clean background
Balanced crop
Nothing distracting
Functional framing
Why This Scores Here:
The image is composed correctly.
However, it lacks depth, dimension, or visual impact.
This aligns with: “Good framing & focal points.”
A 3 is solid and professional — but not elevated.
Subject is clear and storytelling elements are present, but heavy bassinet rails, an upward angle showing up the nose, and background distractions reduce overall composition impact.
Connection is strong and centered, but busy clothing and hospital elements compete for attention, reducing overall visual simplicity and focus on baby.
Strong centered composition with clean lines and minimal distractions. Slight tilt, the upwards angle and visible crib edges prevent it from feeling fully polished.
Primary subject has sweet connection, but composition feels busy. Competing elements and extra fabric draw attention away from baby’s face, reducing overall impact.
Score 4 | Thoughtful Use of Space & Angles
What This Looks Like:
Subject intentionally placed (rule of thirds, symmetry, negative space)
Angle adds dimension
Cropping feels deliberate
Space enhances emotion
Viewer’s eye moves naturally through frame
Why This Scores Here:
The photographer is making conscious framing decisions.
This matches: “Thoughtful use of space and angles.”
The image feels intentional, not accidental.
Strong overhead angle and storytelling elements (footprints + birth stats) add context. Slight tilt and extra floor space pull the eye outward, keeping it from feeling fully refined.
Strong overall composition with baby fully in frame and minimal distractions.
Beautiful connection and soft window light create a strong lifestyle moment. Minor background distractions and tight crop at the top keep this from a 5, but overall composition and storytelling are solid.
Beautiful connection and interaction with baby as the clear focal point. Framing is strong and storytelling is evident, with only slight background elements preventing it from feeling fully polished.
Score 5 | Expert Composition with Visual Impact
What This Looks Like:
Composition enhances storytelling
Depth layers foreground/midground/background
Strong use of negative space
Leading lines guide the eye
Emotional focal point is undeniable
Framing elevates the entire image
Why This Scores Here:
The image has visual impact.
The composition strengthens emotion and professionalism.
This aligns with: “Expert composition with visual impact.”
A 5 feels artful without feeling forced.
Subject is cleanly framed, background is simple and non-distracting, and the baby fills the frame appropriately. Strong use of color harmony and balanced positioning keeps full attention on the face and expression.
Subject is well-positioned with clean framing and balanced negative space. Background is simple and distraction-free, and the soft diagonal pose creates strong visual flow while keeping attention on baby’s face.
Strong horizontal flow, clean background, and intentional layering. Subject fills the frame beautifully with no distractions — polished and balanced composition.
Beautifully centered with soft, balanced framing and clean background. Strong vertical composition keeps focus on baby’s face and delicate details for a polished, professional result.
Strong emotional connection and clean composition. Beautiful use of soft light and intentional framing create a powerful, intimate moment with no distracting elements
