The Wallkill Choirs Take on the Big Apple!

by Kendra Quinn - Junior

On April 27, the Wallkill Valley choirs traveled to New York City for their annual competition. The choirs competing from Wallkill included the Valley Voices, the Trebles,  the Acapella Fellas, and the Wallkill Advanced Choir.

Arriving at the school at 6:30 am, choir students began their long day of traveling, music, and excitement! Performing at Felician College, the Valley Voices first performed three jazz songs that knocked the judges socks off! Starting with Pentatonix’s Sing, the Valley Voices brought a new energy to the stage. Followed by the challenging song Smack Dab in the Middle, the Valley Voices really knocked it out of the park. Wrapping up Wallkill’s performances, the Valley Voices finally sang a lovely rendition of If I Had My Way. What a talented group!

Kicking it off with Will the Circle Be Unbroken, the Trebles took the stage next. Performing a beautiful ballad called Flight Song, followed by a fun, energetic rendition of Music Down in my Soul, the Trebles sure have some talent! The Acapella Fellas then took the stage singing the iconic I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys. Followed by their performance of Stand by Me and Sh-boom, the Acapella Fellas put on quite a show!

Following a great performance by the Acapella Fellas, the Advanced Choir took the stage first singing Twa Tanbou, a very challenging song that tells a story of the importance of working together. They then performed Esto Les Digo, a beautiful and emotional ballad, followed by Ezekiel Saw the Wheel, a lovely spiritual piece. What an impressive performance!

After their amazing performances and a short clinic with one of the judges after each group performed, the choirs took off for their lunch break and traveled around the city. At around 2:30, everyone met back at Lena Horne Theatre to watch SIX the Musical on Broadway. The choir students all loved the musical, and sang along to the songs that the talented cast performed. After an amazing performance from the cast and crew of SIX, students got the chance to get their playbooks signed and to take pictures with cast members!

Their adventure continued as they traveled to Medieval Times for the awards ceremony. Although their knight (the Yellow Knight) didn't make it to the end of the tournament, choir students had an amazing time cheering and watching the show. After a restless day of waiting for their results, the awards ceremony finally took place!

The Valley Voices were ranked: Gold!
