Keeping up with the Choirs!

by Kendra Quinn - Junior

Over the last few weeks, the choir has been incredibly busy with performances, trips, and events! Let’s dig deeper into the excitement that’s been going on in the music department at Wallkill.

Regional and State Choir

In November, several Wallkill students participated in the Regional Choir Concert. After going through the audition process, eleven Wallkill Students successfully made it into Regionals! These students include Choir President Joshua Mendez, Choir Vice President Jesse Diribe, Advanced Choir students Skylar Tomlin, Annette Nathan, Lily Tobachnick, Sam Tobachnick, Hayden Reid, Nicole Wasniowska, and Jackson Saltzman, as well as Trebles members Cara Masino, and Dafina Konushevchi. Soon after, Joshua Mendez and Jesse Diribe earned the highest honor a student can receive in the choral world: The New Jersey All-State Choir! Performing in their concert on November 22, Josh and Jesse performed beautifully in the New Jersey All-State Choir. Congratulations to everyone who made it to Regional and State Choirs!

Broadway Trip

On November 29, both choir and band members traveled to New York for their annual broadway trip. This year, the musical chosen was Sweeny Todd. Sweeny Todd tells the story of a barber seeking revenge on a judge who wrongly accused him, and committing heinous crimes in doing so. Students who went on the trip overall had a great time and can’t wait for next year’s broadway trip!

Caroling

To help spread the holiday cheer, members of both the Advanced Choir and Concert Choir gathered together at Crystal Springs Resort and ShopRite. Singing classic holiday songs such as “Let it Snow” and “Frosty the Snowman”, as well as singing concert songs they had been preparing, the choirs really created a magical holiday experience for customers! Graciously, Crystal Springs Resort and ShopRite donated money in exchange for the caroling to the choirs, which will help to pay for the New York trip in April.

Middle School Concert Previews

On December 8, members of the Concert Choir, Advanced Choir, and the Trebles traveled to Wallkill’s four sending districts to perform previews of their Winter Concert. Starting at Hamburg and making their way to Hardyston, the choirs kicked off the holiday spirit. After a well deserved lunch break, the choirs resumed their singing at Franklin and Ogdensburg school. Performing their iconic “Holiday Sing Along” medley, students from the schools had a great time singing along with the choir students.

Winter Concert

After months of preparation and lots of hard work, students from Concert Choir, Advanced Choir, and the Trebles performed at the annual Wallkill Valley Winter Concert on December 14 at Franklin School. The Concert Choir kicked off the night singing “Sing Noel”, “Hine Ma Tov”, “Christmas Isn’t Christmas”, and “Lift Up Your Voice”. After a great performance from the Concert Choir, the Trebles took the stage singing “Away in a Manger” and an acapella rendition of “Tidings of Joy” (with body percussion!) After those two beautiful songs performed by the Trebles, the Advanced Choir took the stage singing an exceptional version of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, followed by a powerful performance of “Mary Sat A-Rockin’”. Joined by the band, the Concert Choir then took the stage once more to sing their combined number “Holiday Sing Along”. All together, the choirs created a magical music experience just in time for the holiday season. Spreading the holiday cheer with their voices, harmonies, and crescendos, the choir and band both put on cutting-edge performances, and the concert was a great experience for all involved.

Radio Station and Great Beginnings Preschool

Just before winter break, the Advanced Choir traveled to the WSUS Radio Station to perform three of their concert songs on the radio. Performing “Christmas Isn’t Christmas”, “Mary Sat A-Rockin” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, the Advanced Choir put on a great performance! After their performance on the radio, students traveled to Great Beginnings Preschool to sing holiday carols for the children. Dancing and singing along, students at Great Beginnings had a great time listening to the choir’s performance! Following their performances, Advanced Choir students went out to breakfast and returned to the school for their annual secret santa gift exchange. What a magical day!
