Life at home…
When Mrs. Amy Fairweather isn't teaching art classes at Wallkill Valley Regional High School, she truly enjoys living a healthy and active life. She enjoys walking her dogs a couple miles each day and meditating, but wishes she could do it more often. As part of her healthy habits, Mrs. Fairweather makes sure she has a good night of sleep so she is energized for the day ahead. Every week she prepares meals ahead of time so she has a stress free week. This allows her more time to take care of herself and enjoy things like reading, walking, spending time with family and friends, and going on vacation. Mrs. Fairweather enjoys traveling the world and seeing new places. A memorable place she visited recently was Italy, where she describes it as incredible and one of the best places she has ever been to. She also took a trip to St. Croix where she went snorkeling at Buck Island, describing her experience as “Awestruck”.
At work…
Mrs. Fairweather's favorite project to teach her students is The Magazine Collage. This project is about the student using their own original photo which includes a favorite person or place. The idea is to incorporate a lot of color, value, and texture. Students draw the image on a large scale, then they search through magazines to find colors and texture that match their original photograph and glue the pieces to their drawing. As a teenager, Mrs. Fairweather was inspired to teach art while sitting in the very same classroom she teaches in now! Her art teacher had such an amazing impact on her that it
inspired Mrs. Fairweather to do the same. She graduated from Wallkill and loved her time here as a student. After teaching art in Jersey City for 7 years, she had the opportunity to work here. She had ended up replacing her own art teacher when she retired. Mrs. Fairweather says, "Teaching here is like being home," adding that she enjoys "sharing in the artistic journeys of her students."
Personality…
Mrs. Fairweather's star sign is Cancer. She relates to her sign a lot, she explains. She is emotional, intuitive, and protective of the people she loves. Like a mother with her children she possesses strong maternal energy. She is an understanding and creative soul always creating a safe and cozy space with the comfort of her heart. The crab is the astrological sign for Cancer and Mrs. Fairweather relates to a crab in the way that she appears to have a strong exterior yet maintains a kind, relatable, and powerful interior. She firmly believes in the quote by singer Bob Marley, “Every little thing is gonna be alright.” Although short, it holds huge meaning in her life. In order to thrive you must believe everything will be okay. She has this quote hung in her kitchen, which brings good energy to her home. In the words of another meaningful quote by Gandhi, Mrs. Fairweather believes everyone should “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” She believes "you can't complain about things or the way life is, if you don't change yourself. It's important to be your best self in this life."
Interests…
As an art teacher, it seems only fitting for Mrs. Fairweather to have a strong interest in the subject. Her favorite artist is Swoon; she can understand the art created by this person. Swoon is a very expressive artist who Mrs. Fairweather is intrigued by. She loves Swoon's use of line and cut paper elements which she incorporates into her own art work. Mrs. Fairweather's favorite masterpiece is painting on the ceiling of The Sistine Chapel. Located in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence in Vatican City, she never really anticipated seeing it and loving it. She describes her experience as "moving to see such a beautiful piece."
Besides art, Mrs, Fairweather has a strong passion for food. Her most favorite food is Mexican. She enjoys tacos (specifically street tacos), nachos, chips and salsa and guacamole, fish tacos (a go-to for her), carne asada.
While she does make her own Mexican food at home, she appreciates eating at really good Mexican restaurants, too - which are hard to find around here!
