Assistance Needed
Step 1: Cooldown Corner (Classroom Managed)
All teachers should have a space in the classroom where students can go to “cool down”.
Students can go here when they are feeling overwhelmed or upset.
This is not to be used as a punishment, but instead as a place for students to go to self-regulate, gain composure, and return to their seat.
You may include stuffed animals, fidgets, sound canceling headphones, sensory bottles, paper and crayons, ect.
You can also include signs that show breathing techniques, problem solving strategies, or classroom expectations.
Use of a timer is highly recommended so that students have an idea of how long they have here.
On the minor infraction form, the cooldown corner may be used as an intervention.
Step 2: Cooldown Push In (Google Space)
This is used when an administrator/behavior interventionist is needed to assist.
In your Google Space, please include the student's name and "Cooldown Push In".
The administrator/behavior interventionist may push into the classroom to help the student calm down and get back on track IN the classroom.
This is to be used when the Cooldown Corner is not working and the student's behavior is minor.
Step 3: Code Cooldown (Google Space)
This is used when an administrator/behavior interventionist is needed to assist.
In your Google Space, please include the student's name and "Code Cooldown".
This is NOT an official removal.
The administrator/behavior interventionist may pull the student to go for a walk, have a talk, or use an intervention tool to help the student de-escalate and reset OUTSIDE of the classroom.
This is to be used when the Cooldown Corner is not working and the student's behavior is moderate.
Administration/behavior interventionist will keep track of these cooldowns as well as the interventions utilized during the cooldown for each student on an intervention log.
If two “Code Cooldowns” are used in a day, a minor infraction should be recorded.
When a student begins to have multiple cooldowns, the teacher and administration/behavior interventionist consider entering the student into RTI for behavior and they will meet to make a plan of classroom interventions that the student can benefit from (Tier 2).
Step 4: Official Removal (Put in Google Space, Record in JCampus)
In your Google Space, please include the student's name and "Removal".
You may put a brief description of the student's behavior, but it is not required. You will be required to complete a major referral in JCampus.
A student may be immediately removed from a classroom if the student's behavior:
prevents the orderly instruction of other students
poses an immediate threat to the safety of students or the teacher
when a student violates the school’s code of conduct.
This is to be used when the Cooldown Corner didn't work and the student's behavior is major.
Students must be removed for at least 30 minutes unless agreed to by the teacher.
When removed, the principal or his/her designee shall:
advise the student of the particular misconduct of which he is accused
the basis for such accusation
the student shall be given an opportunity to explain their version of the facts
conduct a counseling session with the student to establish a course of action
provide oral or written notification to the parent including a description of any disciplinary action taken
MAY require the parent of the student to have a conference with the teacher or the principal or his/her designee (in person or by telephone)
The student must be able to make up the work they missed with no points deducted for their behavior.
Upon the student’s third removal from the same classroom, the teacher and principal shall:
discuss the disruptive behavior patterns of the student and appropriate disciplinary measure
host a conference between the teacher and the student’s parent prior to the student being readmitted to that same classroom (in person or by phone)
For students who experience multiple behavioral incidents or disciplinary referrals, a referral to SBLC is needed (Tier 2/3).
