Dear Work Group Members:
Hope you are well. JTC met last week and discussed the proposed degrees and recommendations shared by the work group. JTC valued the work advanced by the work group. Members of the Council raised concerns about advancing two computer science degrees and the number of provisos. Discussion also took place about the potential of a single degree that works for a majority of institutions using this work as a foundation. It was noted the challenge of the degree structure and how to translate for advising. JTC decided to take no action at the spring meeting and will discuss further at the summer meeting.

April Meeting - Email prep
Dear Colleagues
Hope you are well. Thank you all for your time to complete the work from our last meeting. Our meeting on Friday will focus on (1) Finalizing both degree paths and (2) an initial review of recommendations for JTC. To prepare for our meeting, the feedback you provided around degree requirements was used to revise the degrees for a final review. Below is additional information and embedded links to the degrees and recommendations for your review prior to Friday.
This will be our second to last meeting. Though we have a third meeting scheduled, I am optimistic we may not need that additional meeting. As I mention above our goals are to finalize the degrees and review the recommendations. This will allow us during our last meeting to fix any additional technical changes to the degrees and finalize recommendations and address any other topics.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Degrees
All institutions should review the degrees, with notes below, to make sure this meets your institutional requirements. Recognize that students may come with additional math or science than your degree requires to find a common path. In addition, for some institutions the degrees may not meet all requirements and the intent is that planned with an advisor the electives will minimize this gap. While we discussed the “remaining electives” should be the same for both degrees, the difference in course distribution in the two degrees requires separate lists so as not to add additional courses in remaining electives that are not needed.
Institutions provided feedback around degree requirements for computer science. From this a summary was created across institutions to identify common courses for degree completion.
The degree makes changes – see yellow- in introduction as we discussed at the last meeting to clarify degree paths and be welcoming and inclusive.
The degree reflects the common courses across the sector with the following notes:
As we discussed recommendations were removed and the degree only includes requirements to complete the transfer degree.
Working with an advisor is repeated throughout the degree to allow students to meet degree requirements for transfer through selection of courses and electives
A review across the institutions revealed
Most institutions require Composition II rather than technical writing. This is addressed in the communication skills with both options listed and “chosen with an advisor” language. By doing this it allows students to choose the best communication course and not take the place of an elective.
Most institutions allow for a choice of science sequence and Calculus 2. This is addressed in the natural science distribution.
The requirement for Calculus 3 was not clear across institutions. This was removed from the required electives and added to remaining electives.
Institutions provided feedback around degree requirements for computer science.
The degree makes changes – see yellow- in introduction as we discussed at the last meeting to clarify degree paths and be welcoming and inclusive.
A review across institutions revealed
As we discussed recommendations were removed and the degree only includes requirements to complete the transfer degree.
The need to add Composition II to the elective choices.
The math requirement was adjusted to be Calculus 3 or Statistics planned with an advisor. This is addressed in D.3. This also allows these courses to be removed from the list of electives.
Natural science distribution is met. This is addressed through the combination of D.1. and D.2.. This also allows some science to be removed from the list of electives.
Draft Recommendations
All institutions should review the draft recommendations for additions and edits. The draft includes the recommendations gathered over our meetings.
