Encoded as such, “Philosophy of Notation” appeared notably first on Charles Sanders Peirce´s (1885) “On the Algebra of Logic: A Contribution to the Philosophy of Notation”, and is getting increasing attention on academic research (coming from different fields) in these last few years as a consequence of questioning how notation embodies epistemic commitments and mediates between language, reasoning, and symbolic practice. This Workshop aims to explore the foundations of notational systems eminently in logic and mathematics, but any other discipline is highly welcome. Beyond their instrumental function, notations structure the very way in which concepts are conceived, manipulated, and communicated. Special attention is to be given to the interplay between visual form, logical structure, and conceptual clarity, raising the problem of whether notation should be considered merely a neutral tool or a constitutive element of philosophical inquiry.
Topics may include, but are not restricted to, the following questions:
What kind of objects are notations?
How do notations contribute to producing new ideas?
Do notations have cognitive values and to what extent?
Do notations have any power of abstraction? In what sense?
Is the way information is encoded crucial for meaning?
How do notations contribute to state inferences?
How can different notations be meaningfully compared?
Does the choice of some certain notation have anything to do with its historical context?
What kind of signs are notations?
What is the connection between notations and the subject matter they represent?
How do notations relate to natural languages?
