The Unfinished Tome is a campaign-style live-action roleplaying (LARP) game for 40 - 60 players running events in the UK.
The player base are ordinary people who experienced a strange dream inviting them to journey to a long-lost tower deep in the wilderness. Through this, they have discovered that they have become "Awakened": stronger, hardier, with inherent magical defences and the ability to learn Lore - mystic knowledge that grants superhuman powers. Those who have experienced this dream found the tower and the Unfinished Tome hidden within: a magical book of Lore that acts as an ever-evolving archive for its keepers.
The Unfinished Tome is sandbox game where there is no one "plot", and you have the agency to make the world react to your actions. Discovering mystical rites is how you gain power. What you do with it is up to you.
The game involves themes of occultism, faith and mystic power. These are not intended to represent real world religions or occult concepts, however real world symbols and concepts may be used as inspiration for elements of the game.
The Unfinished Tome is a source of power and knowledge for the Awakened of the Known Lands who were drawn to it. The magical secrets of the world are found as pieces of Lore which can be discovered and added to both the Unfinished Tome and the Tomes of its Awakened. As a character in the game you will have the opportunity to discover new Lore to add to the Archive of the Unfinished Tome and all player characters grow stronger together as more Lore is added. You can find view the Lore that is currently known here where there is also a guide summarising the currently discovered Lore and the other artifacts of power that are accessible to the Awakened.
The game is full of mysteries. The map is blank, its history is long, and everything has its own story to tell. At events, you will find new places to explore, piece together scattered details, see the consequences of past misdeeds, and learn why this world is the way it is. Piece together the lost stories of old and then use your knowledge to deal with the creatures you encounter and shape the future. What is known of the world of Solem, its lineages, the towns of the Known World and the myths and rumours of other lands can found here.
Our game include a lot of mysteries and writings. We do not expect people to feel the need to read, find and know absolutely everything and sometimes you will need to make choices with some incomplete information.
The Unfinished Tome is a game of radical character freedom. While we write with some expectations on how you might solve an encounter, those expectations are not restrictions. Every lore can be taken on every mission. Every rite can be cast in every corner of the game world. If you can convince the monster not to fight you in character, they will stop fighting you.
This has a few key consequences: not only does it enable you as characters to unearth and explore the plots you enjoy most, invent the solutions we never considered, and make your own victories independent of any external expectation. It also means that you can chase down dead ends, pick fights you can’t win. Character death is a possibility. Some creatures in the world are capable of wiping out the player party in a head on battle and some are devious and will outright lie to you. Part of the game is navigating these challenges.
There are factions and paths in the game that present people with conflicting goals and stances. There are characters with moral stances who will try to convince individuals and the group in ways that oppose other characters’ goals. You can listen to them, join them, or oppose them. You as the Awakened of the Unfinished Tome have many reasons to cooperate, but as you are all individuals with this freedom, you have the freedom to act in discord. This is why PvP is as lightly regulated as it is, because of the weight we want to give to your actions and the liberties we want you to have.
With this in mind, we do want players to be kind to one another. We’re a small system with a wide mix of both veteran and brand new larpers from a number of different LARP cultures. What you see as a small moment with your character can be a defining moment for another. Feel free to compete and argue as characters, but consider checking in with the players OC. Feel free to push the angle your character wants, but bring others along with you. Feel free to go to dark places with the game, but remember the themes and safety calls that are in place to do it as carefully as possible.
If you unravel the mysteries of the Unfinished Tome and comprehend the secrets of the world, it will be by your collective efforts. If you are paragons of morality on any axis, it will be because you chose and fought to be. We give you nothing but the world, so that you may claim it on your own terms.
