Ribbons represent magical power that you, as an Awakened, can now see in the world. Many magical items, creatures and areas will have Ribbons associated with them. These Ribbons can be used to power Rites or other abilities. We ask you not to include Ribbons on your kit where possible.
There are a number of different colours of Ribbons. Different colours represent different types of magic.
The more Ribbons something has the more power it has.
If a ribbon has been used for an Enchantment it cannot be used to power a Rite or other ability; the power is spent and is waiting to be used for a specific purpose.
Some Pages in your Tome may grant you Ribbons. A creature must be willing in order for you to use its Ribbons.
You must clearly have uncontested control of a maigc item in order to use its Ribbons.
Your character can see the number and colours of any ribbons that are OOC visible to you. You may ask a ref what colours ribbons are if you are unsure.
Expended Ribbons on magic items are renewed at the start of the day unless stated otherwise. Ribbons on Pages will state when they are renewed.
Magic items and places will often be represented by a Lammie (a laminated card issued by the game organisers) which will detail the effects of an item, including conditions for its use, any Third Eye brief, Ribbons it may have etc.
Items which are not single use will often require you to Attune to them in order to use or benefit from them. You can only be Attuned to one at any time. There may be ways to increase the number of items you can attune to. To Attune to an item you must have possession of it and concentrate on binding your Spirit to the item for 1 minute. If you are already Attuned to another item, the previous Attunement is broken. If an item doesn’t require you to Attune it will explicitly state this.
Items will often have abilities that can be used for no cost a certain number of times within a given time period e.g. "5 times per hour you may Strike for Fling for no cost." In order to use this kind of ability you must have been in possession of the item for the stated time before first activating it. The exception is if you are certain that the ability has not been used within that time period (such as if you just crafted the item yourself).
In order to learn the effects and powers of an item a character must Gaze with the Third Eye or Attune to it.
There is a special type of magic item called Lingering Power. This represents scraps of magic that linger from previous magical events and there is no other special power associated with the item. The Ribbons on lingering power do not refresh and will expire at the end of the event.
Some items can be used in Rites to craft magic items. These Rites will either specify the ingredients that can be used or give options. e.g. 1 Ingot of Adamant or 1 Ingot of a Crafting Metal. These resources will have a Wise Card attached to them. If you are Wise in the relevant ability you will be able to find out the type of ingredient it is (e.g. Wise in Smithing will allow you to identify metals).
Herbs can also be used for one-off effects such as healing or Cleansing Scourge. The effect of each herb is stated on the inside of the reverse of the Wise Card. If this effect is used the herb is consumed.
