I am creating a project aimed at raising awareness of the devastating effects of body dysmorphia. I will be creating a photo series that offers a compelling visual narrative, exploring the connection between the perception of a fit body and the reality of body dysmorphia. Using my camera, I captured a series of photos that show me in fitted shirts and another set of photos in loose shirts. By editing these images together, I will demonstrate how fit individuals struggle with their body image, often perceiving themselves as either too thin or too heavy. I am showing the darker aspects of working out and the unhealthy obsession with achieving an ideal body image. This project is aimed at promoting a healthier understanding of body image and helping individuals combat the damaging effects of body dysmorphia.
About the Artist
As an artist, my creative art process is to find issues that aren’t talked about in society and make them more known. Some key ideas I tend to focus on in my artwork are perception in society. With my art, I like to show issues that are important to me at the moment. One thing I struggle with during my art process is meeting deadlines. I want to give myself enough time to fully develop my ideas and create work that is worth showing, but oftentimes I don’t plan ahead and I end up making a bad project. Going forward I’m going to try to manage my time effectively and prioritize my tasks. I draw inspiration from people's problems and events happening around me. I like to be aware of what's happening worldwide and how it affects different communities. Historical art movements also give me inspiration, particularly Greek statues because they have so much intricate detail and symbolism that can be analyzed and interpreted in many ways.
