Ambrose Quintanilla

For this project I wanted to create something that addresses aspects of “machismo” in Mexican and Hispanic culture. That said, I decided to depict this topic starting with either stock photos or cut-outs from media outlets (in a total of 3 works), and furthering things by playing around with different settings such as brightness, color, and contrast. Plus, I decided on adding multiple instances of text on these images, in the form of various words relating to “machismo” and even the word itself. In the case of this project, it would be nice if it was able to spark a conversation about the dangers of the “machismo” in Mexican and Hispanic culture. 

About the Artist

I seek to address topics that are personal, important, and/or significant to me. These topics can change on a day-to-day basis, but often relate to identity and acceptance. In my creative practice, I use digital tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I like to create a conversation through my work. This can come in the form of casual conversations, to more serious ones about real issues going on in the world. My art is for anyone who feels compelled enough to view it, and I would like to generate thoughts and conversations that affect people in a multitude of ways, whether it be their feelings that day, or their life as a whole.
