Crocheting with Love from Grandma

Since my family is very close to me, I wanted to use my experiences and connections to inspire my art and reach an audience who can relate or appreciate family the way I do. The works – capturing a blown-up scale of my grandmas crocheting objects – are painted in acrylic, emphasizing color and texture. I hope my project reflects my appreciation for my grandmas skilled crocheting, a hobby and craft-form that she learned from my great grandma. While I may not have had as much practice crocheting, I hope this series of paintings will still serve to honor this traditional multi-generational form of art in my family.

About the Artist

I’ve always enjoyed using objects and people as my subject matter while focusing on what emotions my art can evoke. I aim for my artwork to tell a story and encourage viewers to generate their own unique interpretations of my work. I create art because I enjoy that I can translate and convey emotion through my formal choices: expressing myself through my brush stroke or by the strength/contrast of the values I use. Painting (oil and acrylic) and drawing (charcoal and graphite) are my two mediums of choice. I lean towards realism in my work because I feel that it captures what I try to express and I also enjoy bringing things to life. The variety of color, tones and values is what gives a painting a realistic feel, almost like a photograph. That's what I aim to reflect in my creative practice. I hope that my emotion and time I dedicate is represented through my art and that viewers see what I aim to show.
