Every aspect of my work is aimed to be ethically sourced from recycled or natural/organic materials. This includes the canvas and paper utilized, as well as pigments I used which are made from crushed fruits, vegetables, and plants/roots. The use of these materials reflects connections to Latin American foods or traditions – which includes using traditional mortar and pestle (Molcajete) to grind fruits and vegetables. Foraged items for these works consisted of elements such as traditional dried Hibiscus flowers to create natural dies. Collecting and creating these materials is an artform all its own that becomes an added element in my work. In doing so I have also incorporated a direct line between my heritage and endangered species that once inhabit the southern region of Mexico. Through utilizing ethically sourced materials I seek to create artwork that is environmentally conscious: advocating for wildlife conservation, not just thematically, but through processes, deepening the impact and promotion of ethical creativity.

About the Artist

The use of ethically-sourced and produced materials such as foraged pigments and organic paints in order to create illuminating artwork promotes sustainability, ecological awareness, and ethical responsibility in the art world. By utilizing these materials, I aim to raise awareness about endangered wildlife and the ways in which artists can create artwork using sustainable practices. Incorporating engaging topics surrounding climate change, preservation and wildlife conservation specifically through the lens of a Chicana artist.
