For this project, I use digital photography to create a scene that exhibits presents an array of objects relating to pop culture, with a young woman being devoured by them. I prompted my friends and family to gather any and all objects they own that relate to pop culture and used these objects to fill up the entirety of a bathtub. By taking this approach, I want to showcase just how intertwined society is with Hollywood, entertainment, music, celebrity, sports, and trends. When researching pop culture and its impacts on society, I have learned that its major effects include building and strengthening interactions with people who are interested in the same things. It gives people an outlet to feel included and like they are a
part of a community. With this project I want to show that we all endorse elements of pop culture in our own ways and that this fact in itself creates a shared phenomenon between people.
I believe that this project also serves as a wake-up call to the fact that we sometimes get too caught up in/distracted by trends, mass consumption, Hollywood, celebrities, etc. At the same time, I want to offer a reminder that it is not a bad thing to be a part of the movement, evolution, and upholding of pop culture because it helps us feel included in society.
About the Artist
My art is mainly crafted through the medium of digital photography. My work explores the world around me and how this world influences what I think is worth seeing, documenting, and sharing. I lean towards creating images that place emphasis on texture, shadow, symmetry, and close-up detail. Another common element of my practice is working in black and white, because this allows the viewer to focus on these other elements, instead of being distracted by colors. My artistic influences stem from the ideas and concepts of nostalgia, sentimentality, and popular culture. I enjoy making work that allows me to express my individuality in creative ways. Art is a useful and powerful tool: a spark that can give rise to a much larger flame, by awakening others to their own creativity, or by contributing to social change.
