"Blocking" at TT means: stopping the wurm from spitting out eggs, husks, and drool spit with reflects + invulnerability
Sylvari Engineer can block all husks, all eggs, and possibly a few drool spits; constant skill usage, dodging and repositioning required; not recommended for beginners
Sylvari race required!
1) Prepare your character:
Build template (you can copy&paste these ingame):
- Amalgam (recommended) [&DQMdHRUnSy+AHRQBigEAAF4BXgGCHaMAJQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNQBXAFUAAA==]
- Mechanist (recommended) [&DQMdHRUnRiooARQBigGKAV4BXgELG5UBJQCJAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNQBXAFUAAA==]
- Scrapper [&DQMdHRUnKxsoARQBigEAAF4BXgEOE6MAJQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNQBXAFUAAA==]
- Holo [&DQMdHRUnORkoARQBigEAAF4BXgHlFqMAJQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNQBXAFUAAA==]
- core Engi [&DQMdHRUnLxUoARQBigEAAF4BXgGjAKMAJQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADNQBXAFUAAA==]
Gear:
- ideally tanky with boon duration, but any works
- Energy Sigil -> endurance after swapping weapons (every 9s)
- Amalgam/Mechanist: Relic of Geysers -> endurance when you get vigor; or Relic of the Adventurer -> endurange after using your heal skill
- Scrapper, Holo, core Engi: Relic of Rivers -> alacrity on dodge (without this relic, the timing can get very close, especially on Cobalt; your elite may not be ready in time)
Jade Tech Offensive/Defensive Protocol buffs will grant you extra stats + boons (require EoD + Jade Bots mastery)
Weapons: mace + shield
2) Learn the 1st phase wurm attacks:
animation video: https://youtu.be/uR3OQGfRnec
wide spin: large orange aoe around the wurm -> knockback and damage => dodge/block personally
small spin + drool spit: also a large aoe around the wurm while the wurm curls up, then spits out many small drool aoes -> knockback and damage from the spin; high damage from drool => dodge or invuln-block if available
egg + husk spit (same animation): the wurm pulls back its head, to then move forward and spit out either 3 eggs or 1 husk; this repeats 3 times => this attack you want to "block" with invulnerability/reflect
3) Know how to block different spit types:
Eggs: 40s cd; can be blocked with reflect or invulnerability -> Take Root, Symbiotic Shielding (Amalgam F1), Barrier Signet (Mechanist, this activates around your mech if it's active)/Defense Field (Scrapper toolbelt skill); shield 4+5 (a single shield skill will at most block 2 part spits)
Husks: 80-90s cd; can only be blocked with invulnerability -> Take Root, Elixir S
Drool: can only be blocked with invulnerability -> most drools you need to dodge (Elixir S can be used as long as you will have the cd ready again for the next husk spit)
4) Blocking
When you start learning to block at TT, you can just practice dodging to stay alive and on the right spot during your first runs. Once you manage, try to use your skills to actually block some of the wurm's attacks.
The Power Wrench trait will reduce the cd of your elite skill by 3s every time you dodge. This build aims to reduce the cd of Take Root enough to have it ready for checking what the wurm spits each time it can spit husks.
Position: the blocker must be in the very middle of then wurm, see invuln spot; you need to reposition before each spit; getting the BlishHud blocking overlay can help you find the spot more easily
Husk and egg blocking ("rotation"):
- 1st spit (whenever husks and eggs are ready): use Take Root (this will block the first 2 part spits)
=> check for invuln message or chat log:
- 1x "invulnerable" per spit = husks => add Elixir S to block the entire spit
- 3x "invulnerable" per spit = eggs => add either shield 4 or 5, or Symbiotic Shielding (Amalgam) / Barrier Signet (Mechanist) / Defense Field (Scrapper) to block the entire spit
- 2nd spit:
- when the 1st spit was husks (+ whenever husks are on cd): use Symbiotic Shielding (Amalgam), Barrier Signet (Mechanist) / Defense Field (Scrapper), or use shield 4 and 5
- when the 1st spit was eggs (+ whenever eggs are on cd): use Elixir S
- There will most likely be a single egg spit happening before the next husk spit -> use Symbiotic Shielding (Amalgam), Barrier Signet (Mechanist) / Defense Field (Scrapper), or use shield 4 and 5 while husks are still on cooldown.
While your elite Take Root is on cooldown, and while you don't need to stand on the invuln spot to block, use skills that will reduce the elite's cd:
- keep dodging (trait Power Wrench; if not Amalgam/Mechanist: Relic of Rivers -> alacrity)
- enter/exit Tool Kit utility skill (Energy Sigil, 9s cd; also swiftness -> vigor)
- mace 2 (vigor + barrier -> alacrity)
- Toolbelt skills F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 (vigor) - as Amalgam, save your F1 for egg spits!
- Amalgam: F2, F3, F4 (alacrity)
- Mechanist: F2 + F3 (mech skills; barrier -> alacrity), also mech auto attack
- heal skill if running Relic of the Adventurer -> endurance
Drool blocking:
- Elixir S - only if it will be ready again for the next husk spit (~25s)!
Avoiding wide spins:
- dodge; shield 5 or Tool Kit 4 if you don't have a dodge ready
Please, also remember:
- The "Invulnerable" text and chat message will only show when blocking with invulnerability, using projectile blocks/reflects will NOT show this text!
- Join the 2nd subgroup and inform your commander that you intend to block for easier communication.
- Try to communicate with other blockers: note down "h" for blocked husks, and "e" for blocked eggs.
