This was a fun trip. We hiked about 1/4 mile past the fork (Dog Lake/Desolation Lake) to a point where we could look down the canyon. It was beautiful. The temps were probably in the single digits even though the forecast was about 20 degrees. Probably because we high. Fortunately there was little wind. What a beautiful location we had.
The plan is to camp at the fork to Dog Lake and Desolation Lake (1.7 miles). If we are feeling strong at that point and time permits we could continue to Dog Lake (2.3 miles) or go a little further toward Desolation Lake.

CAMP LIST
Food
Bring your own: Including Dinner and Breakfast.
You can use my pot to heat water. Otherwise, bring your own pot. Additional stoves/pots are helpful.
For breakfast, instant oatmeal in a Freezer Quart Size baggie is a favorite.
Snowshoes are optional, Microspikes are an option or even just boots. I did the hike this weekend in microspikes, I did posthole around 15 times., but I do weigh a bit more than the boys, even with a pack. Snowshoes will be helpful for any off-trail travel. Snowshoes can be rented at REI. Warmer temps will cause the snow to soften and make snowshoes more helpful.
Gaiters - Keep boots and socks dry.
See below in "resources" for winter camping lists
Sunscreen and Sunglasses
Toe warmers, keeping feet warm is a priority.
Sleeping Bag: carrying two sleeping bags probably isn't feasible. Using a sleeping bag liner is your best option for adding additional warmth.
Tents - Backpacking tents - Please confirm your tent spot/buddy before camp.
