We kicked off this year's hiking program on a beautiful autumn day 🙂
We started at the Scout Cabin & hiked the Bronx River Trail , including a few extra side paths. We finished at the County Center in White Plains.
[ Unfortuntely, highschool football games & other conflicts hindered attendance ]
Peter O. is a seasoned Troop 4 hiker +. Max A. polished off his first hike in excellent form
accompanied by Ronak, Steve & Howard . Pictures by Ronak
When you are not in a car on the BRP, you will benefit by observing wildlife ... much artistic stonework under & alongside the roadway ... and structures under several railroad bridges.
October Hike
Before we even left the Scout Cabin, the weekend fun unexpectedly occured , as recounted below :
On a beautiful Autumn day we were looking forward to another great weekend ==
Backpacking in Harriman State Park.

There is that old saying, " It is better to be lucky than smart " == For the second month in a row we were both ! ---
although we had encouragement beforehand from the weather man : " Saturday morning rain ending about 7a.m.
& beginning again on Sunday about 1 p.m." { Except for a light 15 minute shower Saturday night at 12:45, he was correct ]. [ We also lucked out by beating the double digit temperature drop 2 days later. !! ]🙂👍
The Saturday morning showers ended before we left our Boy Scout Cabin . Arriving at the dropoff spot, we hiked in & UP ! to the Torrey Memorial overlooking Turkey Hill Lake . { Raymond Torrey was one of the visionaries in the earlly 1900's who founded the " Long Brown Path " that has become today's " Long Path" which extends to the Canadian border}.
This weekend we hiked along a portion of that Long Path.
From the 1000+ foot elevation there was a spectacular view for Alumni Ben, Ronak, Mike &
Scouts [ l to rt ] Jackson, Luke, Tom, Carlos & Peter
Jackson found several places to try fishing. At mid-day, they chose an up-lifitng spot for lunch
Everyone shared in the very tasty result !
In the mild evening as the sun was setting we enjoyed a leisurely dinner by the water. Then a few hours of socializing before a wind-less night's sleep.
Up at first light we had breakfast, returned the campsite to " leave nothing but foot prints " and took a fast pace out to the early pickup == planned earlier than usual so we could beat the forecasted Sunday mid-day rain.
We were all set to head out for our December Hike when the "bug" going around the Westchester schools took out all but one of our Troop 4 backpackers ! So the Hike was cancelled 🥲

Sometimes our hikes don't go exactly as anticipated.... that was the case this time. Despite a Friday update on ground conditions by a Troop 4 Alumnus Eagle Scout living locally == instead of "bare ground " there were a few inches of fresh snow that had fallen overnight. BE PREPARED ! 👍
Most often when we arrive at the area where we will camp, we have lunch & collect firewood. This time a wet & heavy snow had begun to fall. So everyone set up their tents & tarps so gear would stay dry underneath. Once the fire was started we all were comfortable under Troop tarps around the fire area as everyone dried their wet clothes & gear. A late lunch & then dinner followed.
By morning, another few inches of snow had fallen as we were sound asleep. After breakfast & site cleanup we hiked out in several inches of accumulated snow to the pickup spot.
After getting warm & dry & having a few hot meals consumed, there were happy faces all around !

February Hike
When 2 feet of snow was followed by a coating of freezing rain the week before the hike, it was obvious that the necessary firewood would not be available. With the " double digit below freezing temperatures " of the prior week remaining locally, it became necessary to cancel this hike.
March Hike
On the road up to our hike starting point == both sides of the road were now down to bare grass with just a few areas under trees with the remaining snow from the recent blizzard. That changed when we arrived at the drop-off spot: one foot of wet snow covered both valleys & the hill between where we planned on hiking. 🙃
It proved wise to have planned the route for both days following 19th century wagon trails including a few that are currently used for cross country skiing.... this helped with the footing over the snow hidden rocks & downed tree limbs.
The forecast was for only two light rains at 11:00 pm & again at 6:00 am. The first one arrived at 10:30 but throughout the night there were a dozen drizzles of about 20 minutes each ---- comfortable enough under our tarps & tents. The last one came through just when the morning fire was being started ... then clear skies for a mild breakfast & our hike out.... ALSO, as forecast : the temps for both days were mild with only the slightest, gentle breeze at night 👍

Despite the unexpected deep snow, the group was motivated for a great weekend : (left to right)

As humidity increased with the temperature & with ongoing snow melting, there was often a "fog" present
Safety in the campsite area requires that any " widow makers " be removed
To dry out & to cook, ==a lot of dead wood is essential. Tom M. ran away with honors for the fastest campfire starter ... others were not even close !
Some people need to cool off despite the weather
The color of the fire is reflected in the night-time fog
Concluding our last Troop 4 "winter hike" of 2026
