ROONEY’S FIRST WIN

Birmingham City 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Wayne Rooney seals his first win as boss of Birmingham City in a 2-1 home win against a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side.

Both teams in need of a win and the Owls got off to a good start.

The Blues keeper had his pockets picked in a nervy moment early doors.

Mallik Wilks failing to capitalise on a golden opportunity for the visitors.

But their effort was paid off minutes before the half time whistle, after Josh Windass' sensational free kick was denied by the post which George Byers was alert to tap home the rebound.

Blues were quick to hit back though.

Juninho Bacuna hit a speculative second of the season after the initial corner had been cleared to perhaps save Rooney from a chorus of boos when heading into the dressing rooms.

The equaliser looked to have a positive affect when the team returned for the second half.

Looking re-energised and challenging the Wednesday backline.

Dembele's effort from the edge of the box fooled the crowd (and myself) thinking it'd struck the back of the net.

It felt that chances seemed to have ran out towards the end.

That final ball felt to be what stood in the way of 3 points but the young Welsh international finally broke the spell.

His attempt was parried by Dawson but James maintained momentum and took it round the Wednesday keeper, slotting home Blues' first win in 5 and a vital first win for the new manager.

Sheffield Wednesday still without an away win this campaign and sit stone dead last on 6 points.

Blues now in 14th and a win behind Blackburn on 10th, who we play on Wednesday night at Ewood Park.

Keep Right On 💙
