Secondary school Gesamtschule Iserlohn conducts education for pupils with different qualification, family background and cultural origin. All together we are trying to support them in the best way: Learning German, Maths and English is differentiated, some lessons take place in native languages (Turkish, Russian etc), we focus on learning different languages (English, French, Spanish, Latin), offers of sport activities in the afternoon (Soccer, table tennis, Capoeira, Inlinehockey), social and intercultural learning in projects („school without racism“, Rallye against AIDS, working on social aims, excursions to Concentration camp Buchenwald/synagogues/mosques), projects preparing profession (in cooperation with local offices and enterprises), artistic education (music classes, theater lessons, concerts), student exchanges (Poland, Turkey) and excursions (London, Liège). Students can achieve different graduations. We are currently in the process of becoming a UNESCO school.
After the resolution of the 17 SDGs, in Germany, schools have to focus in all school subjects on „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (Education for sustainable development) and reform the curriculum. Teachers at Gesamtschule Iserlohn are implementing new topics and teaching methods. Fortunately, we work since a lot of years in the field of environment and health and participated at several local and national programs as „Bildung und Gesundheit“, „Gesunde Schule“, „Schule der Zukunft“, „Ökoprofit“. In 2003, parents, teachers and pupils co-financed a photovoltaic power plant. At school, we work with a team of teachers to organize projects, activities as for example our school shop selling ecological and fair trade products and our school garden.
