Sustainability - everyone's responsibility 11/2023 - 3/2024

In November in AZPO, the art teacher Maja Grądzka  organized workshops titled "My Earth." The students created 2D and 3D handmade works illustrating their perspective of the Earth as seen through their eyes.

Eco Design Day with 2nd grade high school class! Today, we had an amazing adventure with creativity and sustainable development as part of the Erasmus+ project "Think globally, act locally" implemented at school! Together with the high school class 2 LO, we transformed materials collected at school into functional and stylish public utility items.

May our new creations remind us that every object deserves a second chance, and the environment deserves our care. I'm excited to be a part of this ecological initiative! #EcoDesign #Recycling #HighSchoolCreativity #SustainableDevelopment 🌿🌎

Today we had an extraordinary experience as part of the Erasmus program titled "Think globally, act locally"! Our students from class 3LO took part in a unique project, during which they purchased ecological products and prepared delicious meals from them! Together with their classmates, we personally prepared dishes full of freshness and health, and then enjoyed them in our school cafeteria. It was not only tasty but also educational! Thanks to such initiatives, we learn to respect the environment and embrace healthy eating habits. #Erasmus #EnvironmentalEducation #HealthyEating

🌿🛒🍽️ Over the past week ( 5th - 9th February), students from class 2LO have dedicated themselves to ecological shopping and creative activities for the benefit of our planet as part of our Erasmus+ project "Think globally, act locally"! 🌍💡

During special workshops at our school, students not only created a leaflet promoting the principles of ecological shopping but also practically utilized the products purchased during this campaign! 🛍️🌱

The result of their work was the preparation of delicious dishes that we could all enjoy together in our school cafeteria today! 🍽️👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

We are proud of our students' commitment to promoting a conscious approach to ecology and healthy eating! 💚👏

Our leaflet was posted on our school website to educate other students and partents how to do ecological shopping.

Environmental art(ists)

Seventh-grade students of Primary school Barilović were introduced to several artists during English classes who want to address the various environmental problems that plague the world today. Art has always kept pace with the pressing social issues, so it is not surprising that ecology is becoming a subject of interest for an increasing number of artists.

Artists whose work was researched use trash as the main material or motif for their works. Their activity begins long before the creative manifestation though. Many of them look for material in nature: in forests, on beaches, in the ocean, so they clean before getting to artistic part. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of material for their kind of art.

Whether they convey their message through a photograph, a sculpture or an installation, the main goal is to raise awareness of how to deal with waste and encourage people to make changes.

A Day of Ecodesign

was held in grade six at Primary school Barilović as part of Art lessons with teacher Nevenka.  The students had a task to designe a useful product by recycling old bottles, jars, cartons, boxes and other things that they did not use any more.  The product needed to te simple, easy to transport and recycle. Here are their creations!

World Water Day 2024

at Primary School Barilović

This year, we marked World Water Day with two educative lectures. The first was about an invasive alien species - signal crayfish, which has had bad effect on local rivers for years now. The signal crayfish suppresses autochthonous, native species and is a vector of the fungus Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of crab plague, to which native crayfish species are not resistant to. The students had the opportunity to hear about the method of catching this invasive species with spears, as well as the procedures for suppressing its spread.

The volunteer project "Ambassadors of the Clean Underground" carried out by the Zagreb Speleological Association aimed to educate students about the importance of the karst underground,  whose caves and pits are reservoirs of drinking water. We learned that our underground preserves 70% of Croatia's drinking water supply, that it is home to 40% of Croatia's endemic animals, but also that it hides hundreds of wild man-made waste dumps.

Class 1 High School participated in an exciting Eco Design competition! Our talented students utilized recycled materials and unused objects to create diverse artworks. Each of them is described in English. This task was part of our Erasmus Plus project called “Think Globally, Act Locally.”

Now we need your help! Our students’ works will be part of an international competition, and the votes will be cast by students and teachers from Poland, Austria, and Croatia.

We invite you to support our young artists! Soon, a link will appear on our website. Click “like” and share this information with your friends.

Thank you for your engagement! 🌟

World Forest Day at Elementary School Barilović

By participating in Dukat's "I love forests" art competition, which was held in cooperation with Croatian Forests, students of the first and fourth grade of Elementary School Barilović contributed to planting of new quercus robur oak trees with their art works. Two seedlings were planted for each drawing at the forest of Spačva, devastated by a big storm last July. Spačva forest is the largest forest of quercus robur oak in Europe!

During the "Work on Change" workshop, first-graders of District school Belaj learned how to use drinking water more rationally. For example, they learned that bathing in the bathtub consumes about 140 liters of water while taking a shower takes only 25 liters of water. By tking part in teeth brushing experiment, they came to conclusion that by letting the water run while brushing their teeth for 2 minutes, they use 6 liters of water unnecessarily.

Add one green habit

at Elementary School Barilović

The care for the environment is undoubtedly the most important topic nowadays. But it is often thought that environmental problems are not our fault and that they will be solved by someone else.

In reality, the accumulation of waste as well as the reduction of non-renewable energy sources are our problems, and therefore, we all should be involved in solving them. This can be achieved by small changes in daily habits that, in the long run, can lead to great results. Therefore, before leaving for mobility in Poland, the students had the task to record a short video about one "green" habit that they practice in their lives which contributes to well-being on a global level.
