As part of an environmental project focusing on bees, their habitat, and the issue of bee extinction, this initiative was implemented during science lessons. The teachers thoughtfully selected the topics in advance, aligning them with current environmental challenges and the importance of biodiversity.
The students were divided into groups, each assigned one of the pre-chosen topics. Their task was to independently research their subject, gather relevant information, and create a poster or collage that visually represented their findings. The topics covered included the impact of climate change on bees, the role of bees in agriculture, and innovative technologies aimed at saving bee populations.
Working with various resources such as scientific articles, environmental reports, and online databases, the students were guided to engage critically with the information and think creatively about how to present it. The project not only deepened their understanding of environmental issues but also allowed them to actively contribute to raising awareness about the importance of bees.
In addition to the research, each group was encouraged to think creatively about how to present the information, ensuring that their final products were both informative and visually engaging.

Environmental Day in school is important because it teaches students about protecting the planet and encourages them to take responsibility for their environment. It raises awareness of issues like pollution, climate change, and waste reduction. By engaging in activities such as planting trees, recycling, and learning about sustainable practices, students develop habits that help preserve nature. Environmental Day also fosters a sense of community and teamwork, as students work together to make their school and local environment cleaner and healthier. This early education helps build future generations who are more conscious about protecting the earth.
THE WORLD EARTH DAY IN AZPO
activities done on
16th April 2024
Today in AZPO we began the celebrations of World Earth Day. On this occasion, representatives from IKEA INDUSTRY, Ms. Wanda Chechłowska-Paw, Mr. Jarosław Wiśniewski, and Mr. Tomasz Awsiukiewicz, visited our school with workshops on "Biodiversity". A highly relevant topic given the current negative impact of human activity on the environment. Students had the opportunity to learn simple ways to maintain biological diversity in their own surroundings. Additionally, they participated in an environmental protection knowledge quiz. Of course, there were prizes. We thank IKEA INDUSTRY for their support!
The students from all high school classes created a miniature forest in a jar.
The students from the 1st grade of high school prepared labels indicating the species of plants planted in our school garden. The labels will be placed next to each plant and then translated into English.
22th April 2024
Students from grades 1-2, on the occasion of Earth Day🌍, had the opportunity to participate in thematic workshops led by Mrs. Magdalena Skreta-Pielenc🧍♀️. With Mrs. Magda, the children planted lettuce🥗 and chives🌱 as well as pansies🌼 and dill🌾. They sowed pansy seeds with appropriate equipment, which were then observed in the classroom. The children received valuable tips on how to take care of the plants, which will now adorn their homes and decorate sandwiches🥙🌮.
7th graders created some posters informing about climate changes and environmental protection in AZPO
The elementary school students created an ecologist's codex and presented it in groups in the classroom to raise ecological awareness.
Earth Day at AZPO in Fijewo. Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, is an excellent opportunity to undertake educational activities and promote ecological awareness among students. The idea of caring for the blue planet unites people regardless of nationality, religion, profession, age, or other differentiating categories. Currently, it is the world's largest ecological holiday, organized in 192 countries - from Singapore to Rome, from Alaska to Australia.
At AZPO, students also celebrated Earth Week during this school year under the theme: "Invest in our planet." During Eco-Week, students participated in many activities, promoting a pro-ecological attitude:
Seedling Action: The collection of plant seedlings resulted in the planting of approximately 30 seedlings on the school grounds, together with the students.
Ecologist's Code,
Nature Workshops: High school students prepared works on ecology, such as "my own forest in a jar called 'ecosystem in a glass.'"
Artistic works: Willing students from 7th grade prepared posters on environmental pollution,
Students' participation in the CleanUpForPoland campaign
Flower meadow with honey plants.
Valuable actions undertaken as part of Earth Day celebrations at school contribute to increasing ecological awareness and building a better future for our planet.
Peer lesson as part of the Erasmus + program
Class 3a of primary school and 1a of the High School conducted a lesson together on environmental actions and labeled the vegetation growing in AZPO. More labels are being created, and now you can already see descriptions of plants along with their characteristics in the flowery meadow.
Busy start to the sunny 🌞☀️ week in fifth grade. Everyone engaged rushed to refresh the school flower beds after winter 🧅🥕🧄, there was also observation of the surrounding nature 🐌🐌🐌🐛🪱🕷🪳🦟 and making wreaths.
With temperatures rising and more sunny days, students od Elementary School Barilović spend more time outside the classroom, so it is necessary to clean up the school surroundings and refresh the flower garden.
The students of Leskovac District School showed their mowing skills by mowing the lawn in front of their school. Pupils of Belaj District School often work in the school greenhouse, which is located in their school garden. This year they planted new strawberries, the fruits of which they will enjoy at the end of the school year.
Earth Day @ Elementary School Barilović
The month of April is the month in which we often talk about our planet during our lessons. Sometimes we write poems, sometimes paint pictures to honor its beauty, but unfortunately more and more often we talk about everything that threatens it to survive.
This year sevengrade students researched endangered plant and animal species in Croatia during their English lessons. Some of them are in danger because of habitat loss, some of them because of pollution or illegal hunting/collecting.
They also talked about an important role plants play in our life, from giving food to animals and people, oxygen to breath and even their medical benefits. They remind themselves what different parts plants have, what are their functiones and revise the process of photosyntesis.
Fourgraders of Elementary school Barilović recycled used cardboard to make an eco-bag in which they brought presents to Kindergarten "Potočić" for joining the ecological action of collecting old batteries organized by our eight grade students.
Fourgraders also created recycling art by painting birds on a used piece of paper.
Haiku poetry for the planet in springtime was this years Earth Day theme during Croatian lesson in the seventh grade.
As May is the most intensive month which requires an extra work in the garden, students of the Belaj district school spend every free moment in and around the school greenhouse. This time they planted their seedlings of different vegetables, but also harvested the first fruits of this year's work, delicious strawberries.
Students of Primary school Barilović decided to mark this year's World Environment Day by taking action. Divided into groups they cleaned the school surroundings, the center of our town and the local swimming area where they are planning to spend most of their upcoming summer afternoons. By thinking globally, we acted locally to emphasize the need of taking care of the place where we live.
Kaćun - strictly protected species
Elementary School Barilović joined this year's international "Day of Enchantment with Plants" in organization by the Faculty of Agronomy in Zagreb with a lecture on strictly protected species - kaćun. Our biology teacher Amalija introduced a rare and strictly protected specie of wild orchid - kaćun, which grows in the meadows next to the school. Special emphasis was given to recognition of the plant and the importance of its preservation. After the lecture, a guided tour was organized to a nearby meadow where the participants could see the kaćun in its natural habitat. The participants were encouraged to actively participate in nature protection.
Afterwords, an art workshop was held for students during which they made informative leaflets on the subject and bookmarkers with a motif of kaćun.
Spring is the perfect time for biology lessons outside the classroom in AZPO in Poland! Elementary school students could participate in outdoor classes in June where they identify and recognize plant species growing in their surroundings. It’s a great way to develop observation skills and understand nature. If you want to learn more, consider various ideas for such lessons, such as the educational project ‘My Forest’ or a field trip to the forest, where students can photograph plants and animals while observing forest management principles.” 🌱🌿🌼🌳📸.
Feel free to explore these outdoor learning opportunities and immerse yourself in the wonders of nature! 😊
On 6th June in AZPO we organised eco fairs to collect money for buying benches in our school garden. It was a good occasion to advertise our Erasmus + programme "Think Globally, Act Locally". Secondary school students prepared some healthy snacks and sold them to raise money.
Cherry picking
As this year's weather deprived us of spring frosts and bad weather, the crop in the orchard also bore fruit. The students of Belaj District School used the first sunny day after a long rainy period to pick cherries. Skillful climbers managed to pick the most delicious cherries from the highest branches to sweeten this hot summery day.
Raising awareness of the importance of taking care of our planet is a frequent topic of elective German and Italian language lessons at Barilović Elementary School.
This year seventhgraders joined the "Add One Green Activity" task during their German lessons and recorded videos about green activities they do in their everyday life while eigthgraders did posters with tips to save our planet in Italian.
Eco jewellery
Sixgraders of Elementary School Barilović made jewellery out of wasted materials during their Art lessons with teacher Nevenka. The aim of this activity was to raise awareness of the importance of responsible waste management and to acquaint students with another way of reusing different types of materials.
Green & Digital
International Expert Meeting
The student cooperative of Elementary school Barilović, Barilko, participated in the international expert meeting "Green and digital" organized by the City library "Ivan Goran Kovačić" in Karlovac.
Along with numerous lecturers who spoke on the topic of sustainable development and numerous associations dealing with ecology and promoting the protection and preservation of the environment, the Cooperative joined in with a poster presentation and an example of good practice.
While the Cooperative was selling and promoting products made by our students team leaders Amalija Misir-Čujko and Lorena Klokočki together with student Anja Blašković presented a poster for the multi-purpose floral page - kaćun and won third place.
Biodiversity of the Barilović region e-book
Since April participants of the Ecogroup together with fourth-grade students of Elementary School Barilović have been taking photos of plant and animal species that live in the vicinity of Barilović. With the support of their mentors, fourth-grade teacher Anka Grman and biology teachers Amalija Misir Čujko and Darko Cerjanac, they named all the photographed species and combined them into an e-book called Biodiversity of the Barilović region.
As a part of this year's final employee trip, the Barilović Elementary school team visited the Golubinjak forest park. During their visit hey enjoyed a walk under the canopies of spruce and fir trees and explore phenomenal caves and interesting rocks.
