Cleanliness holds a central place in Islam. Being cleansed in Islam is really cruical for everyday life in general. Cleanliness in Arabic is "taharah". It is not about physical hygiene it is about spiritual purity (keeping your heart, mind, souls away from sins to be free). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized that “cleanliness is half of faith,” highlighting that the muslim's devotion (loyalty) to Allah is closely linked to physical ; spiritual purification.
The 2 types of of Cleanliness:
Physical Cleanliness
Body: Regular washing, brushing teeth (using miswak or toothbrush), trimming nails, hair hygiene
Clothing: Wearing clean clothes especially for prayers
Toilet: Washing hands and using water after relieving oneself
Spiritual Cleanliness
Wudu (Ablution): Washing hands, mouth, nose, face, arms, head, and feet before prayer
Ghusl (Full-body purification): Required after certain events like menstruation or sexual activity
Avoiding sins and impurities: Protecting heart and mind from bad thoughts
Why does it have to be taken seriously?
It prevents disease and promotes health. It fosters respect for oneself and others. It prepares the believer for prayer and remembrance of Allah. It is linked to spiritual purity, which affects one’s acceptance of worship.

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about menstruation. Say, “Beware of its harm! So keep away, and do not have intercourse with your wives during their monthly cycles until they are purified.1 When they purify themselves, then you may approach them in the manner specified by Allah. Surely Allah loves those who always turn to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves.” Holy Quran 2:22
