Making the Shift:

Educator Self Assessments

EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH IN ACTION: Providing educators with research-based models for effective instruction and assessment, moving students towards greater engagement and deeper learning.

Karin Hess' CCR Self Inventory Template is a tool for individual teachers, collaborative teacher teams, or building leadership teams to use to evaluate their progress toward implementing deeper learning practices throughout a unit, during the demonstration of a competency, across modules, or throughout a year.

Personalized Learning: Stages and Continuums

On the website Personalize Learning: Transform Learning for all Learners, Barbara Bray writes, "When the teacher understands how each learner learns best by referring to their Personal Learner Profile (PLP), it validates them as a learner and gives them a voice in their learning. We wanted to share how the teacher and learner roles change through the stages using specific tools and strategies."

Her continuum model allows teachers to self assess their current practices and to know what steps might be next as they shift to the learner-centered paradigm. She also clarifies the difference among three often-confused educational terms:

  • Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.
  • Differentiation involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This assessment involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.
  • Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.
