The country of Japan has been accused and criticized by the countries participating in UNEP for its shortcomings in the waste management sectors in recent years.
“Japan doesn't have a lot of hazardous waste.” The delegate of Japan stated, “The Japanese government has revised and created new laws and policies as well as implemented them for the management of garbage.”
In contrast, the delegate of Singapore objected with the statement of the delegate of Japan, pointing out that the garbage of Japanese municipalities is incinerated and 10% of the waste remains as ash which reduces the fertility of soil when buried.
“Japan has bee recycling and reusing waste that it produces.” The delegate of Indonesia further inquired,”How is the Japanese government running and managing the recycling programs?”
In addition, the delegate of Nigeria expressed concern regarding general waste management in Japan.
“Toxic gasses are used as steam to produce electricity and the ash is used as an industrial material ” The delegate of Japan replied in defense, “Japan has also been reusing and recycling waste with proper maintenance and the general waste is being handled carefully”
In 2020 a ship from Japan crashed into a coral reef on its way from China to Brazil. This leaked a large amount of oil which devastated the surrounding environment . There was a lack of proper judgment from The Japanese government.
