The final Excelsior School Model United Nation(TESMUN) began with delegates carrying a fresh and energetic mindset. The Human Right Council(HRC) final session was filled with delegates trying to define their country's stand on the death penalty.
“Death penalty or also known as capital punishment is a practice of executing a person as punishment for a crime.” The delegate introduced to the community ”It's a legal punishment for committing a heinous crime.”
The topic for the morning GSL session was whether capital punishment was a violation of human rights. The delegates performed spectacularly when they gave their GSL doing their best to answer the questions that was thrown their way.
“An eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth. Capital punishment prevents horrible crimes from happening again” the delegate of Palestine stated. '' The truth is that once a criminal is always a criminal.”
The delegate explained that the death penalty is only given when a person commits a horrific crime and rehabilitation is no longer possible. Crimes such as murder, rape, and human trafficking are the main reason such criminals get executed.
“Death penalty also provides a deterrent to other criminals it causes convicted prisoners to have zero chances of rentering the life of innocent people.” The delegate argued.
When the death penalty is implemented the individual has no chance of escaping from the consequences of their action. It further frightens the possible criminals from committing their crimes.
The topic plunged the committee into a further debate. As they tried to understand how the penalty worked. It gave justice with the death rapist, a murderer getting their deserved dues but is it good the punishment itself defied the human right, accidents when an innocent person dies for crimes they have not committed, are not rare.
The debate about what is morally good or correct is a never-ending one.
