For this project, we were tasked with designing and creating a model of an organizer. In our groups, we were supposed to form a "company" and design a product to be sold.
The product had to be a locker organizer for a school locker and had to be made at half scale. The locker had to be an original idea and personalized for what you wanted your "costumers" to get out of the product. We also had to design a logo for the company and make a list of materials the locker needed, adding up the cost to later be able to determine a product price and what the profit being made from the locker was. We had to make a sketch of what we wanted our design to look like and later had to turn that sketch into an AutoCAD design.
Our group was looking to create a locker organizer that was more focused towards athletic lockers for the students in our school.
For our rough draft we were going to go towards a more sports themed locker organizer because everyone on my group played a sport. At the top of the locker organizer, we added a piece of wood that would be held up by magnet that had metal hooks which could hold bats or cleats. Beneath that to the left, were Velcro strips that could hold jewelry along with a series of pockets that could hold a variety of things. On the right, was a mirror and a speaker that was attached to the organizer, followed by a zippers pocket. The zipper pocket was put there to hold dirty clothes so they could be in a separate place and not make your lockers smell bad. We also included the rough measurements of the design based on the actually size of the athletic lockers at Lacey High school.
In our final product, we wanted to make the organizer that was effective and multipurpose. So, we made the organizer fold able to be easily moved and added interchangeable parts that you can use depending on who is using the organizer and what you want for your locker. This way the locker can be targeted toward not only athletes but everyone. Our idea of putting a speaker on the product changed because we thought it would be unrealistic to incorporate a speaker on each design we made. So instead of a speaker pocket under the mirror we added a mesh pocket above the interchangeable piece and the Velcro strips meant for jewelry. We also wanted to make it pleasing to look at, so we made the material colors, colors that went together. The dimensions of the final drive are 32" by 12".
This project related to math because we had to be able to solve problems and improve upon design to make them more efficient for the target audience. This is related to STEM because problem solving is a part of most if not all jobs within the STEM field. One notable job that this project can relate to is an industrial engineer.
This project was one of the more interesting and fun projects that we have done. I really like being able to create a whole prototype for a design with a group, while making a company to market our product. The final product made by my group was very successful and creating it was really fun. I brought in aspects of STEM such as having to use the design process to create our model.
