This project actually wasn't a project included in STEM 2 but it was a project that I took part in during my sophomore year. This was a project from my Honors English class with Mrs. Frechette. In this project we had to read about and research one of Dante's circles of hell. After gathering information about our circle, we then had to compile that information into a google slides presentation. My group specifically was assigned the seventh circle of Hell.
The slides had to include a description of the circle that you were assigned which just summarized what happened in that circle. We also had to include any allegories or allusion made in that circle. For example, any reverences to mythical creatures or Greek mythology. There was also an opinion section which answered questions such as if you think the level of punishment for the crime that was committed was reasonable and if that degree of crime deserved to be that at that level of Hell or should it be higher or lower in the rankings. Finally, we had to make our own modernized circle or add people that we know of that would belong in our circle of Hell and why they would belong there.
Dante's Inferno is a book written by Dante Alighieri who was a 14th century poet. Inferno is the Italian word for Hell. His inferno was the first part of three books he wrote: Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Each book is made up of 33 rhymed cantos and go through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. In Dante's Inferno he describes the circles of Hell. According to him there are 9 circles of Hell that include:
The First: Limbo (unbaptized/ "virtuous pagans")
The Second: The Carnal
The Third: The Gluttons
The Fourth: he Hoarders and Wasters
The Fifth: The Wrathful and Sullen
The Sixth: Fallen Angels (heretics)
The Seventh: The Violence Against Neighbors, Oneself, or God, Nature, and/or Art.
The Eighth: Fortune Tellers and Diviners, Grafters, Hypocrites, Thieves, Falsifiers, Alchemist.
The Ninth: Treachery
Dante’s Seventh Circle of Hell is dedicated to Violence. There are three rings that make up the Seventh Circle, each of them having their own type of punishment depending on the crime. Those rings included violence against neighbors, violence against oneself, and violence against God, nature, and/or art.
This was a really interesting concept to learn about and was interesting to hear about all the other levels from the presentations of my peers. Although it was a STEM related topic was a something that I really enjoyed doing and had fun putting together the information and research to present to the class. Although this is an English class, it could be related back to STEM in the aspect of it helps to prepare us with researching topics to then later present them in front of a group of people which is a major part of the STEM course at Lacey High School.
