Make it rain; this is your time to really make that character your own. Want a super smart Krogoth? A Machinehead that can talk the pants off of anyone west of Arlandria? You can make it happen.
Spending XP will come primarily in three ways:
Raising Characteristics
Taking ranks in Skills
Taking Talents
Let’s look at raising Characteristics. IMPORTANT!!! Character creation is the ONLY time you’ll be able to raise Characteristics using XP. So if you start with a Brawn 2 and two games in your trying to swing that hammer like you're a young Robert Baratheon, don’t think you can spend some of the 1,653 XP you’ve been sitting on to bump it up. With that being said, there are ways to make up for a low Characteristic with high skill ranks.
Best way to think of it; how “naturally” good do you want your character to be at something.
To raise a Characteristic, you’re going to be spending 10x the number you’re going to.
Example: I start with an Agility 2. To raise it from a 2 to a 3, it’s 30 XP. To raise from a 3 to a 4 is 40 XP and from a 4 to a 5 is 50 XP.
If you’re looking to go from a 2 Intellect to a 4 Intellect, it will cost a total of 70 XP (2->3 then 3->4)
Now let’s look at skills. Skills like Characteristics can go to a maximum of 5 (ranks). IMPORTANT!!! Your character cannot have a Skill higher than Rank 2 at the end of Character Creation (unless something specifically says you can).
When buying a rank in a Career skill, it’s going to cost 5x the rank you’re going to.
Example: I’m playing an Offspring and I didn’t pick any ranks in Deception with my 4 free rank ups when selecting the career, so it’s Rank 0. To bring Deception to a Rank 1, it’s 5 XP. If I want to bump it from a Rank 1 to Rank 2, it’s 10 XP.
If you’re looking to go from a Rank 0 to Rank 2 in Skullduggery, it will cost a total of 15 XP (0->1 then 1->2)
You can buy skills out of your Career, it’ll just cost a little more. How much more?
It costs an additional 5 XP every time you rank up.
Example: I’m playing a Sure Shot and I want to shoot THE BIG GUNS. Gunnery isn’t a Career skill but I want it anyway. To go from a Rank 0 to Rank 1 will cost 10 XP. To go from a Rank 1 to Rank 2 will cost 15 XP.
Finally let’s look at Talents
WARNING! WARNING! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!
Yep, new RPG system and I’m already throwing a curveball. But it’s slow, nice and inside.
During normal character creation, you can spend XP to get talents. Talents typically cost a certain amount of XP per Tier level. So Tier 1 talents usually cost 5 XP, Tier 2 costs 10 XP, so on and so forth. Also you can’t take the next Tier level talent until the previous connected one was unlocked.
For The Superunknown campaign, talents will be done differently, in a more simplified fashion.
During Character Creation, everyone will get one Tier 1 talent of their choice FOR FREE. At the end of every episode/session, you will be able to take another talent for free, whether it’s another Tier 1 or the next Tier up, so long as you’ve unlocked one from the previous Tier. So it’s possible you can end up with one talent in every tier by the last episode or taken every Tier 1 talent available. (The hope here is since this is our first time running this system, this will help simplify what can be a very overwhelming decision making process of skills, especially with such a limited amount of game sessions)
