"The mighty spacecraft crawled into view, emerging out from a whirling singularity. Purple lightning grounded onto the forward ram scoop. It was an immense vehicle composed almost entirely of engines. The thick hull of the craft was constructed from huge spheres that were picked out in a dark metallic blue that shimmered like hot steel. The surface, pock marked by age and impact craters, gave the gigantic spheres the appearance of small moons stacked together like a vast Newton’s cradle. These spheres wrapped around a long tube that was as wide as a football pitch. At the centre of the ship, four enormous spokes radiated outwards. These rotated slowly to provide gravity for those within the vast, rugby ball shaped habitation pods at their tips. On the hull of the mighty craft a few tiny lights glimmered dimly in the darkness. The name “U.W.S.S. Hand of Valour” was picked out by enormous spotlights. Emblazoned below the lettering, in red and yellow, was the bold insignia of the United Worlds Space Navy; a circle of red planets orbiting a yellow sun. Below this was the navy’s proud slogan of “Honour, strength and unity.”"

Havoc:
"The mighty troop deployment carrier, Breath of Vengeance, sat in a far orbit of Saturn like a giant brooding sentinel, protecting the distant Might of Fortitude. Its huge Watters’ drive engine core was silent as it was coasting on conventional propulsion. Four huge rugby ball shaped pods revolved slowly on spokes around the engine core, holding the fragile human cargo in the safety of gravity, atmosphere and warmth. An array of service ships and shuttles swarmed around the huge vessel like a shoal of pilot fish around a sleeping sperm whale, unaware of the approaching whaling fleet that was bearing down upon it at full speed."

"The scout ship “U.W.S.S. Speed of Deliverance” was the smallest spacecraft that it was possible to build which could still travel through Watters’ space. Having said that, it was still huge. Most of the ship was a massive engine core that wrapped around the central intake and exhaust pipe. There were only two, small, one-gee habitation pods, at the end of rotating arms which held the relatively tiny crew of rescue specialists. This ship was built for speed rather than war. Its aim was to get to where it was needed throughout the United Worlds as quickly as possible, to provide rescue and medical aid whenever disaster struck."

"Trenchard’s attention now focussed on the centre of the Hub. On either side, where the axle would have been on a wheel, a brand-new Hunter class vessel was docked. The Hunters were shaped similarly to a cold war era submarine. Each had two “conning tower” protrusions, or fins, one directly opposite the other. The Hunters were docked by a hatch at the top of one fin and were slowly spinning along with the Hub. As the orbiter drew closer, Trenchard could just make out the name on the side of the nearest Hunter, illuminated by a bright spotlight. ‘The Mirror of Darkness…’ said Trenchard in awe. ‘It’s beautiful.’"

THE EVOLUTION OF THE WOLVERINE DESIGN:
"The Might of Fortitude looked a little like a cold-war submarine. The main hull was torpedo shaped with a pointed nose cone at the front and a long, streamlined middle that tapered towards the main engine at the rear. Mounted slightly forward from half way were four “fins”; conning tower-like projections that were arranged in a cross at ninety degrees from each other. The Might was docked to the Breath of Vengeance by a hatch on the top of one of these fins. At the front, spaced evenly on the nose cone, were four rocket torpedo missile tubes and the dark, metallic blue hull was dotted with several fearsome plasma cannons and mass driver turrets.
‘One thing I’ve never worked out,’ Trenchard said. ‘Why do they make the damned things streamlined? I mean it’s not like they ever enter an atmosphere, is it? They could make them brick shaped and it wouldn’t make any difference in space. It’s even got tail fins for Christ sake!’
‘Well, the tail fins do allow for vectoring of the steering jets,’ Bird said by way of an explanation, ‘but there’s also another very good reason. It just looks striking. It’s all very well sending a flying brick into battle against pirates, but they’re much more likely to be impressed by something that looks the part. The designers made these things look deadly because it’s psychologically more intimidating to the enemy. Humans have thousands of years of programming built into their brains to tell them what looks dangerous and what doesn’t. Her designers took advantage of that. It also instigates a feeling of pride and even love in the crew that pilot her. It’s hard to love a brick.’"

"As the shuttle manoeuvred around the largest capital ship, Adisa’s Valour class command ship, the Spirit of Resurrection, a smaller vessel was revealed behind it. The gently spinning boat resembled the Might of Fortitude. It had a number of minor differences, but it was undoubtedly a Wolverine class hunter-killer. It was also unmistakably brand new. As the shuttle veered closer to the shimmering, freshly painted hull, Bowman-Smith was able to pick out the boat’s name plate, highlighted by a couple of huge spotlights. “The Mother of Destruction” Bowman-Smith’s eyes lit up like fireworks. ‘Joe!’ she exclaimed. ‘Is that?’ Trenchard nodded. ‘I got Fife to pull a few strings at High Command. That’s a brand-new Wolverine class hunter-killer. It’s only the fifth one ever built, straight out of the naval dockyard. It has a few improvements upon the Might. I’m actually a little jealous.'"

Strength of Power
U.N.S.S.
Slow moving and without the capacity for Watters' jumps, these bulky vessels are easy targets in battle and so remain attached to capital ships, within protective shielding. They are used to re-fuel other non-Watters vessels like Wolverine and Hunter class.
(Small short-range scouting vessels, sub light speed)
"The incoming horde of Kestrels dove screaming towards the waiting convoy. They were single pilot, lightweight scouting vessels that were given over mostly to engines and fuel storage with just a small cockpit towards the front. Each had several packages of explosives with concussion detonators strapped to the front of the nose cone. It was a simple suicide run. Pick a target, head straight for it at full speed, impact and explode. There was no finesse, only death. The pirate steering the lead ship towards the rear of the convoy, gritted his teeth inside his E.V.A. suit’s helmet and let out a roar as his ship ploughed straight towards the back of the Skin of Iron."
