There are spoilers for some of the characters detailed below. Proceed with caution!

This is not a complete list of characters from every book, just recurring, major characters.

(A)

Adisa - Dalmar - Admiral of the Fleet

The overall head of the Space Navy, Adisa is a tall, African-American gentleman. He tends to be grumpy and suffers from stress and anxiety. Adisa likes to drink Rooibos tea, one of his calming mechanisms. Has no love for president Chang and sees Trenchard as an annoyance, rather than a hero.

(B)

Bailey - "Cookie" - P.O.

The head chef on the Might of Fortitude. He loves biscuits, so was nicknamed the "Cookie Monster".

Bannister - Matthew - "Yuni" - A.S.

Dropship 2 - 4th Squad - MOF - OMNI-Bot operator

Bannister gained the nickname "Yuni" by a complicated series of nicknames, starting with "Matthew - no nuts" (which was written on his medical report as he is allergic to peanuts). He is from the U.K. on Earth.

Bird - Paul - Captain

Bird taught Trenchard at the Berlin Academy and then fought alongside him on Mars. He issued Trenchard his dolphins when Trenchard was posted to the Might of Fortitude. A fierce fighter, a big eater and a rowdy drunk.

Trenchard elbowed his way to the front of the crowd, where his suspicions were confirmed. Sitting at the table, with chilli sauce running down a napkin that was stuffed into his shirt collar, was a mighty man. He wasn’t what you would call fat, but the man had a frame like an oak barrel. He was easily as tall as Captain Collins and broad with it. He had a jolly face with piercing dark eyes and his hair was shaved either side and then plaited into a long ponytail at the back.

Bob

The erratic A.I. of the Kalpesh Vayu. Bob was given his name and his appalling Scottish accent by Aska Saito. Recently, he has shown the first signs of computer senility. He is programmed to protect Saito at all costs, but he does have a rather sentimental side and is prone to sulking.

Bowman-Smith - D. J. - Captain

A friend of Trenchard's from Mars, she was part of the Westerhope mission. She is a specialist in crossbow and sniper rifle. She has a liking for chocolate biscuits. She becomes the Captain of her own ship, the "Mother of Destruction".

(C)

Carter - Ben

Brought up in the slums surrounding Star-spires, this hapless eighteen year old is taught by Max Fisher at the academy on Cairn. He has a love for the paranormal and regularly contributes to Chorlton and Wheeler's "Reality Check" podcast. Overweight and more than a little clumsy, he was never going to make the best trooper.  After leaving the navy, he became a security guard on planet Harbour in the North Star II system.

Chang - Deng - President of the United Worlds

Scheming President of the United Worlds, Deng Chang is a short, Chinese, irritable man. He is vicious, underhanded and sexist. Balding with a pencil moustache, he has a liking for brandy and cigars and all things antique. A narcissist with a massive ego, he named Chang Island after himself. He was responsible for the governing of Mars during the Belatu-Cadros uprising. A power-crazed, military dictator, with dreams of ultimate power and control. "Unity by strength!"

Chaplin - Elaine

Elaine Chaplin is a dark-haired scientific and medical assistant to Claude Papaver. She habitually wears a red lab coat. Outwardly friendly, she can be hard nosed and knows what she wants and how to get it. Brought in to the team working on the "Sentinel" project by Claude Papaver, she became involved in the development of the "Providence chip" and assisted in the first "bio-plug" operation. She ultimately specialised in the bio-engineering of several prototype specimens at Pap-Corp's secret laboratory complex.

Chertok - Boris - Lt.

Squad Leader - Dropship 1 - 2nd Squad - MOF

This Russian trooper is a family man who has a wife called Alexandra (his "little rabbit") and new baby daughter (Iskra). He often quotes, "In Russia, we have a saying", followed by his sage (but not always useful) advice. Like many of his fellow countrymen, he drinks his Vodka straight. He is a technical specialist and frequently helps Captain Trenchard with surveillance and computer issues.

Chrichton - Bruce (Sickbag)

"Sickbag" meets Trenchard at the Berlin Academy on Earth. He became nicknamed "Sickbag" after an unfortunate incident while zero-gee training aboard the "vomit comet". Later, he is posted to the top-secret Pap-Corp facility, "Hades" base.

Ciaputa - Constantine - Commodore - Hand of Valour

Ciaputa is a jobs-worth, middle aged officer who has risen as far as she can in rank and is unhappy with her situation. She frequently vents her frustration by reprimanding her subordinates.

Cochran - Hilary - W.o.

Weapons Fire Control Officer - MOF

From the U.K. on Earth, Cochran is the weapons fire control station officer on the Might of Fortitude. Nicknamed "Scarlet" because of her dyed red hair, she is frequently described as "bouncy, like a puppy". She is eager to please and full of energy. Her brother died in the space elevator "drop".

...she looked terribly young. The navy were pushing recruits through the academy much faster recently. That inevitably had a knock-on higher up the ranks. It was also dangerous. Officers needed experience. The woman standing in front of him didn’t look old enough to legally buy a beer, let alone operate weapons systems. Or was that just the jaded perspective of his ageing mentality? She had bright red hair, not ginger but dyed a distinctive red colour. She had about her the air of a bouncy Labrador puppy. Trenchard looked her up and down with disdain as the woman saluted and caught her breath.

‘…and you are?’ Trenchard asked with a sneer.

‘Warrant Officer Hilary Cochran Sir, but everybody calls me Scarlet,’ the woman said through panting breaths as she smiled hopefully.

Collins - Mark - Captain

An old friend of Max Fisher's from the Berlin academy on Earth, Collins meets Fisher again on the Breath of Vengeance as it travels to Earth for the ceremony to give Fisher his medal after the battle for Europa. Collins is Canadian and stands well over six foot tall.

Coloroso - Anibal - A.S.

Dropship 1 - 1st Squad - MOF - Flame Unit Specialist

From the Basque region of northern Spain, Coloroso is best mates with Vinny. He is extremely gullible and will believe almost anything that Vinny tells him. He likes to tell very bad jokes.

Cox - Gerry

(Jarman Barboletta)

A thin and weedy, undernourished young lad, Cox is berated by Trenchard for wearing a kitten badge, given to him by his girlfriend, Nancy. For this gaffe he gains the nickname "Mr Fluffy Kitten". After being wounded in battle, he becomes the unwitting test subject of the Papaver Corporation and has a mental breakdown. Tortured by visions, Cox descends into a grizzly world of vengeance and madness.

(D)

Dasilva - Eduardo - "Eddie" - COmmander - X.O.

Dropship 1 - Squad Leader - GOS

During battle, Dasilva wears a distinctive red headband to keep the sweat out of his eyes. He is a Geordie, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the U.K. on Earth. His brother was killed by an exploding Pap-Corp rifle, for which he holds Papaver personally responsible. His beloved Mother ("Mam") is also dead. He's a chain smoker and heavy drinker, so it's no surprise he became Trenchard's best friend and drinking partner after they met on Mars during the battle for Belatu-Cadros. He has a tattoo on his right arm which reads "Hand of Valour forever" around combat knife on ribbon. He regularly plays "Go" with Max Fisher, but usually loses.

Davidson - Edgar - L.S.

Dropship 1 - 2nd Squad - MOF - Pastor Armour Operator

A Scottish midget (or more properly, proportional dwarf) from the rough end of Glasgow. After winning a fist-fight with the rough-arsed Streeter, she wins the respect of the crew. Davidson is the highly skilled, Technologist, Pastor unit operator. The prototype Pastor, powered armour suit, is designed specifically for C.Q.B. within spaceships and stations. To connect to the Pastor's systems, she has two bio-plugs, one in each wrist, which control the weapons.

(F)

Fife - James - Admiral - High Command

A dour Scot and Trenchard's mentor, Fife is fair, down to earth and honourable. He was Vice Admiral in control of Belatu-Cadros on Mars during the uprising. He promoted Trenchard to Captain of the Might of Fortitude after its maiden voyage. Fife is a resilient fighter who is not afraid to pitch in with the troops. He rose through the ranks after a long and dangerous career, just like Trenchard. He sees Trenchard as a kindred spirit. He is no fan of Admiral Adisa, or of President Chang.

Fisher - Maximillian - "Max" - Captain - Gift of Stealth

Max Fisher attended the Berlin naval academy when he was sixteen. He developed a love for all things Japanese after he was assigned to the Japanese embassy under Ambassador Tachibana, soon after graduating. He is adept at the Japanese board game of "Go", which he plays with his sparring partner, Dasilva. He likes to drink green tea.  With long black hair tied in a ponytail and a goatee beard, his tall, muscular frame is striking and unmistakable. He became known as the "hero of Europa" after playing a prominent part in that battle and received the medal of honour from President Smith. Soon after, Fisher became Captain of the Wolverine class "Gift of Stealth". Fisher was horribly injured and disfigured in battle.

From Northern Ireland, this man-mountain is stubborn and bloody minded. He has tattoos on his knuckles, "drink" on his right hand and "feck" on the left.

He pours ketchup on everything he eats. He likes to fight and his opinions are very black and white, with no shades of grey. Traumatised by a suicide bomb on Mars, he was responsible for a serious error of judgement and was christened the "butcher of Belatu-Cadros". He was put on trial at Star-spires before being posted to Might of Fortitude.

Mabius - Charles - Commander

An upper-class Englishman with a hatred for most things and most people. Mabius can be sadistic and cruel. He became Admiral Turner's errand boy after meeting her for first time during the attack on Camp Whitley and becoming her aide. This French tactician makes the perfect foil for Trenchard's more chaotic command style. In her mid thirties, Noir is a tall and rather cold figure. She is familiar with many forms of technology, having been a technician on several vessels.

(O)

Overvoorde - Captain - BOV

Captain of the Breath of Vengeance, Overvoorde is used to having Admiral Fife looking over his shoulder. The two are firm comrades and frequently talk over their worries. Overvoorde will overrule Fife on occasion, when under direct orders from High Command.

(P)

Papaver - Claude

The owner and creator of Pap-Corp, Claude Papaver is driven by his work. After his wife and daughter were killed in separate, tragic accidents, Papaver turned to science to divert his mind from dark depression. Descended from the wealthy owners of banana plantations in Costa Rica in the 1930's, Papaver inherited his family's fortune and invested in future technologies, research and development. Pap-Corp is now the biggest manufacturer of weapons and navy vessels in the whole of the United Worlds. Papaver's private flagship vessel, the S.S. Bertrand, is packed with many prototype weapons that will not be rolled out to the Space Navy for many years. His company has created the Vicar and Cleric rifle, the prototype Bishop pistol, the Pastor suit, the Sentinel project and the top secret "Providence chip". Papaver also worked on the engines of the Kalpesh "Vayu" starship and he was gifted the prototype vessel. Pap-Corp competes with Akihito Nakamura's company, Proteus Pharmaceuticals. Pap-Corp has been directly responsible for the development of bio-weapons and their implementation in the Space Navy. When not aboard the Bertrand, he lives in a penthouse apartment in Paris, overlooking the Eiffel Tower and Pap-Corp's head offices.
