Hosting Captain, Chris Farley welcomed our Captain of Captains, Mike Johnson and 15 fellow Captains. Tea and coffee and sausage baps greeted their arrival and the following order of play was announced.
First Tee at 11 am with 3 x 3 balls and 2 x 4 balls, 100% handicap Stableford off the yellow tees. Prizes for first three individual scores plus a surprise Team Prize (best combined scores on the day, cards drawn out randomly). Nearest the pin on the 10th and nearest the line on the 14th fairway.
Weather: reasonably warm start with broken sunshine (11 am, giving way to cloud cover but it remained very warm. A couple of light sprinklings of rain for a very short time during the round which kept the players cool. There was very little wind but because of overnight rain the greens were a little slower than normal Due to the overcast sky, the course was
relatively empty for the Captains to enjoy it almost to themselves.
Individual Stableford result:
1st Bob Hale. (Grange Park) 36 points
2nd Steve Worthington. (Haydock Park) 35 points
3rd Alan James. (Huyton and Prescot) 34 Points
A notable mention to Peter Hurst who, on the 16th, lost a ball which we should have found easily in an open area when he had a really good card. Thrown off balance a little, Peter ended up with a creditable 33 points.
Team game winners
Steve Worthington (Haydock Park) and Bob Hale (Grange Park) with 71 points
Note: because there were 17 playing, one card had to be drawn twice. Ellie from the office drew the cards and Steve Worthington’s card came out twice. (has he always been this lucky?).
Congratulations to all of the winners!
Nearest the Pin: Brian Lawlor (West Lancashire), just beating Paul Jamieson Graham Swaby and Paul Johnson.
Nearest the Line: Brian Lawlor (West Lancashire). just beating Alan James and Mike Johnson.
A very enjoyable day, and it has to be said that the banter has increased as the individual characters have emerged much to everyone’s delight. We missed out on the quick wit of Steve Tremarco as his flight was delayed but his sizzling steak was enjoyed by those with a healthy appetite for more. The desert was photographed by some before it was devoured, a true work of art and extremely tasty too. Paul the chef maintaining the catering reputation of Lee Park.
Thanks go to the green staff for the excellent presentation of the course despite Monday being their most difficult day after the competitions on the Sunday. Thanks also to everyone involved in the planning and hard work on the day including the bar and catering staff. The greens were slower than normal after heavy overnight rain but some still found them quick, however the greens were praised by all.
The biggest thanks go to everyone who played on the day and contributed to such a wonderful occasion. I look forward to hosting many such days in the future at Lee Park.
